“AfriNLLB: Efficient Translation Models for African Languages,” by Yasmin Moslem et al.,  a recent paper accepted at EACL 2026, explores how smaller, optimized translation systems can deliver strong performance without the heavy infrastructure typically associated with large-scale models. It builds on the idea that you don’t need massive scale to achieve meaningful impact, you need the right data, architecture, and focus. For a long time, progress in machine translation has been tied to bigger datasets and larger models. But this research highlights a different path: one where efficiency, localization, and deployability take priority especially for underrepresented languages, and this is where the real opportunity lies. Because translation is not just about converting text from one language to another. It’s about unlocking access to information, services, education, and digital participation. For African languages, that access gap is still wide. This is why the role of language data infrastructure becomes critical. @equalyz_ai focus on collecting voice and language data, even through feature phones directly supports this new wave of efficient multilingual systems. Models like AfriNLLB can only perform as well as the data they are trained on, and for many African languages, that foundational data is still being built. As the ecosystem shifts toward smaller, more deployable models, the importance of building high-quality, representative datasets will only increase, because in the end, the success of multilingual AI is determined, not by model size alone, but by how well it understands the languages it is built to serve. Different languages. Same truth. Across cultures, one principle remains clear: the best outcomes are not rushed, they are built, nurtured, and earned over time. In today’s fast-moving world, it’s easy to chase speed, but real impact, the kind that lasts requires patience, intentionality, and consistency. This is how we approach building language AI at @equalyz_ai From curating high-quality datasets to ensuring true representation across African languages, we understand that you cannot rush integrity, because just like wisdom teaches us: What is built with patience doesn’t just work; it endures. @SwahiliBible @Swahilination_ @swahilipotfm @SwahiliRealTalk @Yorubaness @yoruba_proverbs @ajebutter22 @HausaTrends @Hausafilmsnews @abujahashtags @IgboBible @IgboProverbs_ @IgboHistoFacts @IgboProgress #EqualyzAI #MondayMotivation #AfricanWisdom #PatiencePays #LanguageAI #ResponsibleAI #DataIntegrity #BuildWithPurpose #TechWithIntegrity

I just got into @ycombinator, got $500K, and I’m moving to SF! I started this remittance business last year after I lost both parents and today we have processed over $60m from Africa and about to finally get an IMTO license. I wasn’t even gonna apply to YC if it weren’t for @garrytan always encouraging me through his timeline post. I’m excited to for this new phase, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. If you’re in SF, let’s hang out! DMs open to see what we can do. I’m just joking, and practicing my speech when I get into YC finally

iDICE Startup Bridge
iDICE Startup Bridge@iDICEStartup·
The iDICE Startup Bridge Programme has officially launched, introducing a structured pathway designed to support aspiring entrepreneurs and early-stage founders across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to move from idea to validation, and from early traction to scale. The programme operates under the broader Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (@iDICE_Nigeria ) Programme, an initiative of the Federal Government of Nigeria, implemented through the Bank of Industry (@BOINigeria) and financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB), Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). Recognising that founders at different stages require different kinds of support, the iDICE Startup Bridge is delivered through two distinct pathways: Founders Lab, which is now open to applications, and the Growth Lab, scheduled to launch in a subsequent phase this year. Applications for Founders Lab open today, March 16, 2026, and close April 20, 2026. Selection will be conducted through a clearly defined, merit-based evaluation process aligned with published criteria. Apply now: idicestartupbridge.ng #BuildNext #iDICEStartupBridge

I was once with this person in another country who always want to be in company of white people. I mean we blacks could be hanging out and they'd go sit with the whitest group of people in the room. It was kind of weird to me although I know the person doesn't fully live in Nigeria but still... and I noticed the person always found a way to look down on somethings as being Africanized and like it doesn't make sense but ready to embrace everything in a white people conversation. Whenever I find myself in a roomful of people in a white country I always scout for the blacks whether they are African or not. It just gives this warm feeling of familiarity whether we speak same language or not. I remember being in a country where there was hardly any blacks. The day I saw another black there was this instant connection from the way we nodded at each other even though I don't think they were African. I don't know if it's a thing to want to get validation from white people and having that I'm one of you guys syndrome if there's nothing like that then I'll call it the Kemi Badenoch syndrome 🌚

Introducing VoiceBridge, EqualyzAI’s purpose-built solution for collecting hyper-local, nuanced and ethically sourced speech data for African languages at scale. VoiceBridge is built to work offline and be accessed through feature phones. Most voice data collection tools uses reliable internet and smartphones, but across many African communities, feature phones and limited connectivity are still the norm. Here are some features that makes VoiceBridge different; Offline- based architecture, designed for real African realities Accessible through feature phones, not just smartphones Built specifically for low-resource and tonal African languages Community-centered data collection Structured for AI readiness from day one Designed to capture dialects, accents, and real linguistic nuance Transparent, compliant, and responsibly governed This means speech data can be gathered from rural communities, remote regions, and underserved populations, the very voices that are often missing from global AI datasets. Most voice datasets ignore the complexity of African languages, Voice Bridge is built around it. It enables researchers, institutions, and partners to build speech models that truly understand African voices, not just translate them. Because if AI is going to serve Africa, it must first learn to listen to Africa. At @equalyz_ai, We’re not just collecting voices, We’re building representation in the AI era. @ZuluBible @Swahilination_ @AfricaAi75287 @black_in_ai @AIforGood @AI_Market_Trade #EqualyzAI #VoiceBridge #VoiceData #AfricanLanguages #SpeechTechnology #AIForInclusion #LanguageTechnology #DigitalEquity

Preserving Indigenous Languages in the Age of AI requires partnership, structure, and scale. At the commemoration of International Mother Language Day, @dsn_ai_network convened a high-level conversation in collaboration with @DataDotOrg, alongside academic partners from the @UnilagNigeria and @UPTuks, who co-developed the Language Digitization Playbook. This was not a symbolic dialogue. It was an operational call to action. The session brought together hundreds of participants online from across Nigeria's campuses and cities. With an average of multiple learners per connection, the reach extended to thousands of young Nigerians engaging in real time. The bandwidth demonstrated one clear reality: there is national interest and readiness to preserve our languages through technology. Our expert contributors examined the structural requirements for ensuring African languages are represented within modern AI systems. Without deliberate dataset creation, documentation, and validation, languages risk digital exclusion in the rapidly evolving AI ecosystem. The official launch of the Language Digitization Playbook, developed in partnership with @DataDotOrg, @UnilagNigeria, and @UPTuks, provides a practical, field-tested framework for responsible, scalable digitization of oral languages. More importantly, it moves communities from observers of AI to architects of it. The opportunity now extends beyond awareness. Young Nigerians can mobilize within their communities to collect, structure, and digitize language datasets using a working methodology. Through structured participation, contributors may also unlock access to grant opportunities designed to accelerate responsible language preservation efforts. This is how inclusion becomes infrastructure. The future of AI will reflect the languages that are documented today. The work must continue. Download the Language Digitization Playbook: data.org/reports/digiti… #InclusiveAI #LanguageTechnology #DigitalPublicInfrastructure #DataScienceNigeria #AIforImpact

Happy New Week @dsn_ai_network Tech Tribe! What you refuse to own will quietly keep running your life. Growth doesn’t begin when everything is perfect. It begins the moment you stop deflecting and start taking responsibility. Accountability isn’t punishment. It’s power. It puts you back in the driver’s seat. Think of it as holding up a mirror. It shows you the wins, the missteps, and the areas you’ve been avoiding. Not to shame you, but to show you where change is possible. This week, pause and look inward. What habits are shaping your outcomes? What small decision can you take ownership of today that moves you closer to who you want to become? Real progress happens when honesty turns into action. Not when it’s easy. Not when it’s convenient. But when you decide your future is worth showing up for. Your story is yours. Own it. Shape it. Lead it. #MondayMotivation #DataScienceNigeria #Innovation #TechForGood #Accountability @FMCIDENigeria @NITDANigeria @AI4Dev @3MTTNigeria @DataFestAfrica @dsa_org @berkeley_ai @black_in_ai
