Ammo is expensive. Dry fire doesn't have recoil. So: buy a .22 version of your carry pistol, or at least a defensive-style gun (not a target .22). Many good pistols are out there today: •Glock 44 •Sig P322 (not a striker gun) •S&W MP22 •Taurus TX-22 (doesn't suck) •Walther P22 A lot of these guns are light enough that you get some recoil, not the same as with full-size rounds, but enough you still need to practice fundamentals that will carry over. Be sure to confirm with 9mm or whatever. You can practice with more realism than dry fire and cheaper than full-power loads. 5¢ a round for .22 vs 25-30¢ a round for 9mm. I will shoot 500-2000 rounds on a good summer's weekend; that might be $700 for 9mm whereas I paid maybe $200. There’s also the fatigue factor. Shooting a few hundred rounds of a larger caliber in one session wears people down. None of this replaces centerfire training, but I'd rather put 500 rounds through my Glock 44 and then 50-100 rounds through each of my 9s than blow a ton of money and tearing my hands up. It’s not glamorous, and it's not a replacement for shooting with "real" guns, but it works. If you want to shoot more, and spend less doing it, a .22 pistol is one of the best ways to get there.

The .22 version of the M&P is a hammer-fired gun with a much different trigger feel. I’d love to have a conversion kit that let me have the same exact trigger so I’m developing a different muscle memory for a skill like drawing from the holster and immediately engaging under time pressure.
