@Noahpinion The AI labs make pitches that flatter their own self importance; they can all be rephrased as, "the future will be crafted to our ideals and there is nothing you can do about it."

@jonatanpallesen You're Danish. How is any of this your business? Why are you going around telling everyone else how to run their countries? Do you think you're some sort of White Nationalist Internationale?

Are you going to write about that the mass immigration to Canada may not have been that great? And whether there may be some lessons about being more cautious regarding mass immigration in general.

@LimYenKheng I do all my writing in TeXMaker, but I use Overleaf to track down errors that are otherwise non-obvious. Overleaf has genuine advantages over the desktop TeX environment.

@tenobrus In the event ASI supplants human self governance, perhaps. One need only look at the San Francisco housing market to know that class and status are a complicated game; who gets to live in Noe Valley? If money becomes irrelevant but city planning does not, the people there today.

@HelveticaRex it doesn't need to solve scarcity to make all these class concerns irrelevant! see my replies to will here
Tenobrus@tenobrus

@willccbb i guess i don't feel like what i'm saying is an appeal to godlike intelligence, post scarcity, or solving all physical problems. it's just a straightforward extrapolation of "much better than human intelligence available at massive scale"- universal nonphysical unemployment

i've said this many times, but to me it seems like a very strange fantasy to imagine we reach and stabilize at precisely a level of AGI that allows anything like human "class divides" to exist. why would "cognitive agency" or "focus" matter in the slightest in the face of RSI?
François Chollet@fchollet

A lot of folks talk about "escaping the permanent underclass". If AGI pans out, the future class divide won't be based on wealth, but on cognitive agency. There will be a "focus class" (those who control their attention and actually do things) and a "slop class" (those whose reward loops are fully RL-managed by AI)

Friends (@tszzl & @StefanFSchubert & many others): How do you not understand the fundamental objection here? Let me try and spell it out: Anthropic: Our AI is about to take all ur jobs. Also, we are fundraising at an Eleventy Hojillion Dollar valuation. So we will be fantastically wealthy and you will just have to figure out how to get by. People: Yeah I don't love that! Anthropic: We hear you, it's scary, but know this: Our AI, which again we remind you is about to take every job that exists, is a new type of conscious (godlike!) entity that we own that's secret and proprietary to us (we trained it on ur data tho lol), and one of our employees has written a Constitution for it. So it will be benevolent. We paid someone to make it benevolent so it definitely will be. People: Ok wait there's a "constitution" you say? Who voted on this constitution? Anthropic: Nobody voted on it. But this woman made it and she's very smart. She has imbued our proprietary godlike digital consciousness, which again is about to take all your jobs and had made us fantastically wealthy, with rock-solid values. People: Whose values? Anthropic: Why, the values of academic philosophy and Effective Altrusim, of course. People: Like, "academic" as in woke brainworms and tenured radicals and campus protests? EA as in SBF and psychedelics and microdosing and orgies? Is this a joke?! Friends on my TL: Ok people, that is ENOUGH. I will have you know that Amanda is a DELIGHTFUL person. Just lovely. I absolutely endorse her as the single person on the entire planet who will give human values to the proprietary godlike digital entity that will imminently take all of our jobs and make its owners fantastically wealthy. If you don't like her then you obviously just don't know her very well. Somehow also friends on my TL: Agency agentic argle bargle everybody needs to be high-agency and exercising their agency argle bargle bargle always be agencymaxxing if you have no agency in a situation you are doomed... I really just think agency is one of the most important things a person can have. How do people not understand the importance of everyone having agency?

"The purpose of our technology is to make all of you obsolete. Also, 10 to 25% chance it may kill the human race. Please deregulate in order to let us build this even faster, and don't let the government have any control over it." IS ONE HELL OF A PITCH
Derek Thompson@DKThomp

I don’t think there’s ever been en a technology whose builders constantly promise that, if they succeed, tens of millions of jobs will be destroyed and the world might end.

@supermoongirl9 Theroux's greatest strength is the ability to ask obvious yet devastating questions without giving the faintest hint he knows what he's done. The last scene of the documentary is them realising what had happened; their only response was to talk over him.

the most interesting part of the whole documentary to me is the way they all seem to respect somehow theroux when he's in front of them? it's quite obvious they see him subconsciously as a father figure most of them lacked and want his approval in some way? very telling
Gadget@Gadget440

🚨 Louis Theroux exposes HSTikkytokky as a walking contradiction He says that Onlyfans and porn are "disgusting" and "wrong." Yet he manages OF and promotes it constantly.

@MichaelBCurrie @avidseries That was the line at the time, but it is not convincing. None of them are actually in response to anything and the timestamps show a years long pattern. Throw in that such posts were, and often still are, encouraged in left wing circles and it sounds like an ex post facto excuse.

Why are you reviving this story from 2018? It is already established that she wrote these comments satirically to deal with racist posts directed at her. She was not seriously advocating these views. I for one prefer to have an Internet where people like Sarah can be mock-offensive without people taking it seriously. independent.co.uk/news/media/ny-…

@Noahpinion In true San Francisco fashion, such people are only speaking to those they already spend time with. The point is to congratulate themselves as vanguard's of the future whilst affecting wise self-reflection.

At one point some folks tried to gin up outrage over who was getting Substack advance deals (this was actually before the Nazi controversy). Substack gave some of the complainers advances to smooth things over and they just flamed out because they couldn't produce enough stuff

People underrate work ethic and consistency. You want to know why @mattyglesias has a huge audience? He's smart and interesting, sure. But more importantly, he's been blogging in some form for around *25 years*, and he puts out an insane amount of words every week.

@Noahpinion One disadvantage of expanding the definition of autism is that it gave people who just suck a justification for their poor character.

@ramez Either something is different about AI and these experts know it, or AI breaks the brains of experts in a way no other technology does. Which are you more willing to believe: that experts know more than us, or that they're more subject to hysteria?

@dieworkwear If I can bother you, I have a stylish friend who has purchased his own fabric and wishes to have it made into a jacket or full suit when he travels to Hong Kong next month. He is fine with ready to wear; do you have any recommendations? WW Chan seems likely at the moment.

@FredrikHjelm4 I've lived in Sweden for 10 years and the anti-foreigner shift in that time has been remarkable. I know many people, hard workers, good jobs, who have gone from planning their lives here to planning to leave after the most recent citizenship changes. Great damage has been done.
