The AI labs have actually done a bad job explaining what the future they are building towards will actually look like for most of us. Even “Machines of Loving Grace” has very few well-articulated visions of what Anthropic hopes life will be like if they succeed at their goals.

@LimYenKheng I do all my writing in TeXMaker, but I use Overleaf to track down errors that are otherwise non-obvious. Overleaf has genuine advantages over the desktop TeX environment.

had too many students not able to install latex on their computers, and the only way they write tex documents is on Overleaf. This feels wrong. Tex is supposed to be open software, but still being used via an enshittified entity, online dependent. It shouldn't be like this

@tenobrus In the event ASI supplants human self governance, perhaps. One need only look at the San Francisco housing market to know that class and status are a complicated game; who gets to live in Noe Valley? If money becomes irrelevant but city planning does not, the people there today.

i've said this many times, but to me it seems like a very strange fantasy to imagine we reach and stabilize at precisely a level of AGI that allows anything like human "class divides" to exist. why would "cognitive agency" or "focus" matter in the slightest in the face of RSI?

A lot of folks talk about "escaping the permanent underclass". If AGI pans out, the future class divide won't be based on wealth, but on cognitive agency. There will be a "focus class" (those who control their attention and actually do things) and a "slop class" (those whose reward loops are fully RL-managed by AI)

Why are you reviving this story from 2018? It is already established that she wrote these comments satirically to deal with racist posts directed at her. She was not seriously advocating these views.

I have been thinking about this post for days. During pauses, when things slow down during the day, this is the emotion I’m left with. Things are going to change. We will (I hope) get to other side with something better. But we will also lose many things, and it’s okay to grieve for them.
