It is amazing how little the press is willing to dissect US decline under Trump. The US got no help with Iran, was scolded on Taiwan, says it got a small Boeing deal (China has not confirmed) and Trump appeased on Chinese students, microchips, etc. Xi even insulted US power. And yet it is being reported as a modest successful event. It was a strategic failure by the US and marks a notable moment in US decline.

Angie Nixon, a Jacksonville Democrat now running for U.S. Senate, sat outside DeSantis’s office for five hours Friday. She wanted to speak with someone in the governor’s office about affordability and the new congressional map. The Capitol Police arrested her on a trespassing charge. Press were ordered out of the building. Two of her supporters were arrested with her. DeSantis then went on social media. He retweeted a post from an allied account that called Nixon a “ghetto rep.” He added his own caption. “FAFO.” This is the same governor who in his 2018 campaign warned voters not to “monkey it up” by electing his Black opponent. The map Nixon was protesting — passed in a special session two weeks ago — adds four GOP-leaning seats heading into November. When you knock on power’s door with documented evidence, power doesn’t debate you. It demeans you. Then it arrests you.

I’m struck by how often Trump referred to Xi as his “friend” and a “great leader.” Xi Jinping, chairman of the Chinese Communist Party, is a dictator. He also offered no such reciprocal praise for Trump. That asymmetry makes Trump appear in a visibly weaker position.
