today i’m adding the first non-bitcoin jpeg to my vault. welcome home, punk 6424! punks are special. not because they were “first” or because of “the art”. they’re special because of the people who own them today, the people who owned them in the past, and their stories. i heard some people saying recently that punks “dumped” and are “rekt”. then i looked at the chart. sure, they’re down quite a bit from the peak. but they still cost over $100,000! and they were a free mint! this got me thinking: how does a jpeg become so legendary, that people are paying 6 figures for it — the price of a luxury car — and consider it CHEAP? and i think more than anything, it’s because of the journey the punks went through as a community, and the massive impact they had. they weren’t legendary on day one. they started kind of cringe. but the people who held them early didn’t just build the nft ecosystem, they built a big chunk of the entire crypto ecosystem. tons of the leading founders and investors who built the defi and ethereum ecosystem (which influenced other chains like solana and bitcoin today), were wearing crpytopunks in the trenches, back when it wasn’t cool. i think that’s why these jpegs still sell for 6 figures, and people call that cheap. because this collection, this community, played a crucial part in making crypto what it is today. so of course it has value. honestly i don’t even care if it went to $0, holding this piece of history is meaningful to me. there’s also a personal angle: i was around when the punks launched and i faded them. i was a big laser-eye maxi at the time, spending days and nights arguing with eth people on twitter, being close minded and oblivious to the progress they were making. so while i could’ve minted a cryptopunk for free, i’m instead getting one at the price that i deserve. And hopefully it’ll serve as a nice reminder for me whenever i become close-minded again, that being close-minded is expensive. 🐱🐱🐱 this is my only ethereum nft for now, and my heart is still with ordinals. i’ve been talking a lot about the collections i like in ordinals, so i’m not going to repeat that again here. but i do want to use this opportunity to share my thoughts about the “cryptopunks of bitcoin” meme. i think it’s midcurve mentality. what made cryptopunks into the legend that they are isn’t that they were “first” or that there were 10,000 pieces or that the traits are pixelated or that some people tweeted some memes. honestly saying that is an insult to the punks imo. as i alluded to above, what made the cryptopunks legendary is the impact that their community had (and still has). that’s it. we - the Taproot Wizards company - are in the business of making legendary bitcoin things. i don’t think any of our brands are cryptopunks-level yet. but i think the Quantum Cats have a shot at becoming legendary. not the “flavor of the week” jpeg, not the one you buy to go to parties. generationally legendeary. why? because our community is CHANGING THINGS. it’s pushing bitcoin forward, actively, every day. it’s the first jpeg community ever that is actively working to upgrade the chain it’s on with OP_CAT. our community took OP_CAT from obscurity 3 months ago, to being in the top of mind of builders, capital allocators, developers, and miners. in the last couple of weeks they had 2 massive wins with OP_CAT being assigned an official BIP number, and the launch of OP_CAT on the “signet” testnet. the Quantum Cats community pushes bitcoin forward. for real. and when the entire ecosystem will transformed by OP_CAT, it will become very obvious which community made that happen. 🐱🐱🐱 so, big thanks to the punks for teaching me an expensive lesson about building lasting communities. i hope to learn a lot more from them from now on. and to my ordinals degen frens: let’s try to chart our own path. i don’t think there’s going to be a “cryptopunks of bitcoin”. but if we play our cards right, we can do things our own way and leave our mark on this space, just like they did. meow 🐱

You gotta do these things - if you’re not sure how to do them, ask and I’ll explain. 1) revoke open approvals to marketplaces 2) hold NFTs on a hardware or MPC wallet with NO approvals - this is your “vault” 3) don’t touch the vault unless you are awake, sober, level headed 4) when you want to sell NFTs, move them to a dedicated wallet for selling. Grant approvals only on that wallet 5) use scam detection tools. There are free options available that are solid, but I recommend paying for @Kerberus which covers all L2s and has fewer bypasses. I’ll drop a 10% off code below. Self custody is not easy. If you don’t take it seriously, stuff like this will happen. I’m available to spend time for free with Pudgy holders on the phone talking about security. HMU for my calendly if this is something you’re interested in.
