@opinali It's not that they don't care about games and gamers, they don't need to, that's not their role. what is baffling is how often they don't care about the business beyond their next quarter. That is a problem across our economies, not just games

🔫"You can’t rule out the possibility that executives are idiots" And I agree at least with this part, John. They mostly aren't idiots, they are just craven bean-counters who only care about next quarter's stock comp and bonus and don't give a flying fuck for games or gamers. 🔚

This reaction from John Carmack may have surprised some id/DOOM fans but not me. John will always be near the top of my Pantheon as an engineer and gaming innovator, but there's this other side of him also well known if you've been paying any attention.🧵
John Carmack@ID_AA_Carmack

I have been trying to find something meaningful to say about the Id Software layoffs. My “Microsoft will probably be a good steward of the brand” statement isn’t aging well, and this is certainly going to dampen the mood of the founder reunion at QuakeCon next month. I’m saddened, but I can’t muster anger or outrage over it. I don’t have access to the books, but I suspect that Id Software was a marginal business from Microsoft’s perspective. I believe the reports that Minecraft revenues have been carrying several other studios. To continue being produced long term, games need to succeed, not just be beloved. Games are competing with every other option for spending your leisure time and money, and the competition is brutal. You can’t rule out the possibility that executives are idiots, but that shouldn’t be your default belief. I don’t think there is any obvious path that would have doubled the revenue from Id games. Could they have gotten more with a different pricing strategy? Could they have created more things for fans to buy? Could they have cost effectively marketed in a way that reached more players that would have loved and bought the games? Could they have changed the game designs and broadened the appeal to more players without alienating existing ones? Could they have produced the games at a lower cost, faster or cheaper? I really don’t know. The game isn’t over yet, and I hope the studio rallies through.

This tweet posits that authors are mad because, among the 1% of authors who write sci-fi, 1% of them imagined AI less-capable than Claude. And people are like, “yeah, seems right!!” The echo chamber is WILD on here. I really am going to have to make this video aren’t I?
Andrew Curran@AndrewCurran_

Watched Project Hail Mary (I liked the book). What immediately struck me was how stupid and useless the ship's computer was. LLMs have probably already broken the vast majority of sci-fi worldbuilding done over the last thirty years. Probably explains some of the author ire.

@RdHdSteppeson so this label does nothing more to AI sloppers, but hurts real artists who use AI for programming and other mundane/technical things its only usage is virtue signalling and witch hunting it conveys only provenance and not the state of the actual product

Tim’s big issue, and it’s reflected in Epic’s entire strategy, and why Valve succeeded and will continue to assuming they stick with it. Valve is not like innately better or more benevolent. Well, maybe a little, but at the end of the day they are a business, and out for their benefit. Which, in an ideal world, is about making the product customers want at a price they can afford. Epic is doing the same, but the issue is in who their customer is. For Valve, players are the consumers and the product they sell is access to the developers and publishers. To that end they facilitate things via consumer facing features that better facilitate this. For Epic, though, the publishers and developers are the customers. This is why all their strategy was targeted at them, lower cuts and all. The players are a resource they want to give access to but they fail to understand cultivating it. They tried brute forcing it with exclusives and free games but lacked even basic player friendly features and to this day are way behind. Their concern is, as demonstrated here, about how these things affect the developer. Valve’s premise is based in the idea that customers want to know and it costs them nothing. Epic’s is that their customers want to hide it. It’s ‘unfair’ to their customers. Meanwhile, Valve goes after price parity cus it’s ‘unfair’ to THEIR customers. Once you figure out how a company is oriented this way their behavior makes sense, stripped of moral pretenses.
Pirat_Nation 🔴@Pirat_Nation

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney has called Valve’s AI disclosure policy on Steam “irresponsible,” arguing that forcing developers to label games using AI could unfairly target smaller studios. Sweeney believes AI will soon be a normal part of game development, so requiring developers to label games that use AI “makes no sense.” "I think it's really irresponsible of Valve. They shouldn't do it, because it makes it much, much, much harder for a game developer to have a chance of success. You have to choose from either not using tools that can make you way more productive, and probably failing due to competition that does." He also warned that these labels could make it easier for people to review-bomb games, especially those made by smaller studios.

GTA 6 HAD to launch discless. It's genius PLUS I think it's the future for mega blockbuster games. I don't like it either, but as game developer, I understand why. Before you flame me, let me explain: 1. Main reason above all else - No supply shortages. If this is really the biggest game ever, there's simply no way you would be able to get every disc into everyone's hands in time. And you'd have millions of frustrated fans. 2. No SCALPING . If you think you saw overpriced PS5's during covid, imagine the price rich folks would pay for GTA6 when it's sold out for weeks. 3. Global simultaneous launch. Reduces spoilers ruining it for people who had to WAIT. This also allows you to control the price per local region instead of crazy price surges because of delays to certain areas. 4. Mother fucking LEAKS. If this was discs, the financial incentive for Jim the GAMESPOT employee to sell that disc to someone 2 weeks early so they can rip the disc and leak the story online would be insane. 5. Logistics. The sheer amount of warehouse, shipping, and logistical nightmare to get that many discs pressed and moved around the world would have been a nightmare. A NIGHTMARE. 6. No manufacturing costs. Instead of paying for all that disc printing, boxing and warehouse space. They get all the revenue if you just buy it from the online store. 7. No Gold Master. Every game I've ever worked on - Disc manufacturing typically starts around 8-12 weeks before launch. The game needs to be in a "gold master" to get ready for disc. You can still create a launch patch, but if it's a but annoying to have make launch patch instead of just focus on the game as a whole. 8. REAL FANS. They can release just a disc version 3 months later and you insane hardcore fans are gonna buy it TWICE just to get that damn trophy box. Okay you can flame me, now. I can take it.

Its a hard pill to swallow, and one many dont want to admit. When I was in class, far too many fellow students were more interested in gaming than game art. If you want to succeed, you have eat sleep and breathe the craft. That’s who youre competing against for the same jobs.
Henning Sanden@henningsanden

For 3D students: Most I’ve met simply aren’t doing the hours needed to get into the industry. Studying only 10:00-16:00 every day won’t cut it - particularly since only a portion of the day is spent on actual work.

@AghBlargh @WillFaucherVFX You have it wrong. For some people watching their kids grow is not a factor, having a life means something different to them. not saying you need to be like that but you compete with them nevertheless. I also don't think hard skills are the thing missing in the industry.

Sadly, it's true. Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate series. There's not much I can add beyond confirming what's happened. But I will say this... Creator Martin Gero developed a new Stargate series over two years, ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon. It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025. As of today, officially, that original vision is no more. We'll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters - or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past. My heart breaks. For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honor the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.

@greg_ashman For me, they kind of mistakes AI makes are what is most obviously not conscious about them. That's when you see it really isn't thinking about things the way we understand thinking.

The reaction to Dawkins deciding Claude is conscious is fascinating. It really is just the Strong AI position that Roger Penrose was criticising in the 1980s. If you think consciousness is just an emergent property of a sufficiently complex computer then of course AI is conscious. It passes the Turing test and that’s it. The really interesting part is why it is obvious to so many of us that AI is *not* conscious: obvious to the point we think Dawkins’ credulity is amusing. What are we basing that on? Are we deluded or is there something else to consciousness that we cannot articulate but that we clearly sense?

@PS_Leoluch Like everything...it depends. if you have a lot of instances of this high poly mesh it will end up eating into your budget. If those textures you are using to blend only load once but are used for a lot of different variations or even across multiple assets...it depends

One of the most dumb decisions I see - going low poly and making complex material layering and a lot of high res textures. Going with dense geometry is the easiest way to do high fidelity realistic content. It is not important how many polys you have if each of them are expensive to render
Yevhen Karpenko 🇺🇦@CaptainGPU

@rfleury I think your analysis glosses over a lot of the production realities that shape how current pipelines develop and has nothing to do with art/programmer leanings. Given the chance artists/programmers would love to find a better balance but time and money constraints come up

This ignores an important shift in the gaming industry, which is the dominance of art & production teams in producing content, and the shrinking role of programming teams doing the same. And that *does* have a major impact on download sizes. When a programmer is in charge of content, they try to get as much content out of as few assets as possible. Assets are broken down into generalized pieces which can be pieced together for a larger variety of purposes. That “piecing together” is a programming task, which is why it works. On the other hand, when an artist alone is in charge of content, they naturally develop less “building block”-like assets, as they’re trying to investigate a cohesive artistic vision. When there’s a need for a new asset, there’s not really a good mechanism for the artist to programmatically reconfigure existing assets to fit that need, so they will either duplicate an asset & tweak, or create the new asset from scratch. This is true for textures, shaders, materials, models, and so on. This development process eliminates obvious wins from deduplication and compression, because subtle and slightly mutated pieces across many assets could theoretically be deduplicated & programmatically reused, but it’s impossible to do that without a comprehensive audit of all assets, something that no team really wants to (or can) do.
sofia@grrlCockpit

"code" doesn't take up space and "optimisation" in the mistery magic dust way gamers think about it doesn't free it either. The vast majority, by orders of magnitude, of a games size is assets
