@KyleTreasure idk for whatever reason democrats really became associated w late arriving deadlines during the COVID era. I think properly administrated mail-in ballot programs (see: Florida) are a great idea, but certain models (see: California) are so horrendous it damages the whole concept.

@JamisonHuber2 I agree! I think the reaction is just because of all the *other* election tinkering that's being proposed. People are nervous about any changes with the SAVE act and other proposals. Timing is perception.

I really struggle to see why the idea of requiring all ballots to be received by the close of polls on election day is controversial. Elections need immediate winners. Letting results drag on for weeks because an unknown number of possible ballots may arrive is just an awful idea

@electionsjoe I think your statements are contradictory - if your ballot isn’t delivered in time because it was postmarked ON election day, that’s absolutely the fault of the voter, not the mail system.

@RobertGehrke In theory eventually the removal campaign will run out of people willing to remove their names. Do you think they’re anywhere close to hitting the bottom of the barrel?

A quick Prop 4 update: Only 49 signature removals were reported statewide today, none of them in the crucial SD15.

@jkimballcook @countjor I think it varies a lot from mission to mission - in my mission the aps sent an email to every missionary Sunday night w numbers for every companionship, so everyone was very aware who was the “best”

I'm not saying Zac is lying, because I have no idea whatsoever, but I could not have told you at any point who the highest baptizing missionary in my mission was. For all I know it might have been me, but if you pay attention to that you're there for the wrong reasons.

This is sad. I know as a politician these companies are going to spend a billion dollars against me for saying it but 🤷🏽‍♀️ Pervasive gambling is not good for society. It turns life into a casino, traps people in addiction & debt, surges domestic violence, and fosters manipulation.

My favorite part of the caucus last night was when they read aloud the Utah Republican Party Platform, especially that one part about gathering signatures.

@bendreyfuss More than anything cnn should be embarrassed about the quality of the writing. The sentences were unwieldy. They were awkward to read. Was that really the best language their professional writers were able to come up with?

This is nitpicky but I actually don’t think it was “outrageous.” It was a bad tweet but it’s not like they said “Hitler was good and we should do more Hitler stuff.” It was just a humorously bad muddled attempt at a sort of literary “what began as a day of fun and frolic” lede

@CorieWhalen in 2024 utah had a similar situation - the legislature failed to follow statutory timing requirements and the ballot language was misleading. unlike Virginia, our Supreme Court struck down our amendment (D) for those reasons. hopefully Virginia follows the same line of reasoning

It’s honest to god fraudulent to pair this ballot language with the reality of this exceptionally partisan map. How can people be expected to understand what they’re voting on? “Should the Constitution of Virginia be amended to allow the General Assembly to temporarily adopt new congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia's standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census.” Vote no. @VA_forFairMaps

@souljagoyteller if Gonzales had dropped out before the first round do we think opposition to the AK guy could have consolidated around a single candidate? or do we think Herrera would have obliterated the competition?

@NeilNevins this is also what the original Animal Crossing was like. About a third of the animals acted like you were ruining the neighborhood by moving in

Kanto games are fun because so many NPCs in the game are openly hostile towards you. You go into a restaurant and the guy behind the counter just goes “we’re on a break! get out of here!” That’s what being a kid was like.

@nikicaga seems like the obviously correct reform policy. is there any chance enforcing separate deadlines, one for the incumbent and another for everyone else, could be unconstitutionally discriminatory and thus illegal?

I fear things like this will only become more common again, like in Tammamy Hall days An obvious fix seems to be that the filing deadline should be automatically extended by a week if an incumbent withdraws less than a week before the deadline
Matt Rice@matt____rice

Sure looks like Steve Daines made a Chuy Garcia-esque move, abandoning his re-election campaign minutes before the filing deadline closed, only for another candidate to essentially be handed the nomination while clearly having knowledge of the incumbent's plans

@RobertGehrke have clerks historically accepted packets that started w these misdated signatures? i’m assuming the actual misdated signatures won’t be counted, but do you think the better boundaries people/dems will file suit? would they have any chance of success on the merits?

Got an explanation from the Davis Clerk. There were a number of packets where the first person dated it 2025 instead of 2026. Because the law requires a packet to be submitted w/in 30 days of the first signature, whole packets were initially rejected, but accepted on 2nd pass.
Robert Gehrke@RobertGehrke

Prop 4 Repeal Update: Another 2,000-plus signatures added today and it looks like a good chunk of them are in Davis Co. Those districts that were really close are now not. The clerk's office somehow missed over 1,000 signatures in SD7 alone and now it's 885 over the goal.

Apparently the race for Byron Donalds' seat features two former House reps from states that are not Florida (and a former state senator from a third non-Florida state for good measure)
