It has an interview with Aonuma that directly states that each game's placement in the timeline comes after they've developed the game they want, because they don't want to box themselves in by going into the project with a placement in mind.

The timeline is something that has been growing in the background since every single game is either a prequel or a sequel. All the games are connected. It’s amazing how Zelda fans woke up one day and decided that the Wild games were reboots, and now a good chunk of the community accepts it as fact. Crazy stuff. Only in the Zelda community.

@dizziedee Holy first release PAL copy, Batman! My first RPG was FF Mystic Quest. It was terrible, the learning curve was a right angle, and the music was mid. But to this day it remains the title that got me into turn-based RPGs.

As long as the ones that require proper continuity have it, it's okay if other games get to play a little more fast and loose with the finer details. They don't want to box themselves in too hard.
