@InlandCaGuy I think the most likely reality is 20-year old men in 2026 are slightly less 'woke' than 20 year olds in 2021 but still far more 'woke' than 20 year olds in 2011 or 2001. But at the same time, young women are far more woke.

Coupling is falling fastest amongst the least educated. Great column today by @mattyglesias, I'd also flag this graph by @jburnmurdoch. As I have written, people are raising their standards, and only couple up when it's more rewarding than alternatives. So those with a less attractive package get ghosted and ignored. (1/2)

Having a career and being a mother isn't actually easier than being a mother without having a career. Everybody has different struggles but implying that having a career is somehow a privilege over being a full-time mother is shady and plain wrong.

The problem is that raising young children is not only exhausting but lonely. A woman can go to the office and 9/10 times the work is easier, she'll get a social life from it, and she can come home and do what she wants. And that doesn't even take into consideration the disposable income factor. Yes, this is all less rewarding and joyful than raising kids but the burden is real. Women need community. They need more than just help, they need other moms around them who they can relate to and empathize with. If they don't have this they not only get burned out, they push their negative emotions onto their husband. Observe the level of stress a mom has when she is chatting or tidying up with a friend while their kids play vs when she is by herself. It's night and day. Creating not simply female spaces but spaces for MOMS is one of the biggest ROIs we can be making to change the culture around having children and improve the birthrate.

Some of Mamdani’s admirers on the left have noted his allergy to the left patriotism of Sahra Wagenknecht, Sinn Fein, or (arguably) Bernie. Mamdani’s inaugural address had a localist-globalist postnational quality, with references to anticolonial liberation struggles, etc. I’m curious to see where the 2028 left factional candidates will land on the national-postnational axis. Hewlett-Piketty-Warren thought tends to be national (in part because they have a junior auxiliary GOP division); pure, uncut Third-Worldist neosocialism is postnational.

I get accused of being a “centrist” (or worse) all the time, but I’m really just an unreconstructed lib of the sort that was mainstream on the left circa 2010.
During the 2010s, I missed the identity train, recoiled from the cultural chauvinism of the very online, and stuck with the belief that individualism is better than collectivism.
But I still think class is real and inequality is a problem, striving to accept people as they are is a matter of basic human decency, and that the social project of our time should be to expand the definition of what it is to be an American to encompass the growing diversity of our society.
