Cool project: the DC Waymo delay dashboard tracks how many DC residents are dead because the mayor and city council keep demanding studies instead of allowing Waymo: tbhochman.github.io/dc-waymo-dashb…

Ah yes, the Wild West, the closing of the American frontier, the birth of cinema, automobiles, radio, professional baseball, basketball, and football, and the Roaring Twenties, all of which famously have never left any sort of cultural imprint

@frasmcm It's two things - 1.) The very right-wing men are very loud online 2.) A lot of it is literally teenage guys (the dumbest group of people on Earth) saying dumb things publicly.

the narrative here is powerful - been asked a lot whether young Scottish men are turning right, the answer is "a handful" the polling here suggests that the *ratio* of hardcore to moderate cons is much higher than older gens and wonder if that's influencing perceptions
Jerusalem@JerusalemDemsas

That young men are sexist and hate women and are increasingly conservative has become one of those stylized facts of public debate. But is it even true? Maibritt Henkel looked into the question for @TheArgumentMag, using our original polling: theargumentmag.com/p/the-bros-are…

@InlandCaGuy I think the most likely reality is 20-year old men in 2026 are slightly less 'woke' than 20 year olds in 2021 but still far more 'woke' than 20 year olds in 2011 or 2001. But at the same time, young women are far more woke.

How about we do the grown-up thing already proposed and have a series of three debates between @georgeallenva and @GovernorVA ? He didn’t offer to debate you or your memes. What would be the point?
L. Louise Lucas@SenLouiseLucas

I’ve heard Governor @georgeallenva would like to have a debate on redistricting and I agree- so I am challenging him to a 21st century meme debate where we can present our case on redistricting. We can go back and forth as much as he wants leading up to April 21st!

@andcsontos @souljagoyteller TBF, every Italian PM seems to try to rejigger the system to help them out. Meloni's might've been worst than the others but "Italian PM changes electoral system" is not a new news story as opposed to most countries.

@souljagoyteller Her original electoral reform proposal was blatantly aimed at creating an Orbán-style unfair electoral system (and very similar to the Legge Acerbo) and she's still pursuing the project in some form.

@mattyglesias Why is it fair to ask less-educated men to be better, but not to ask less-educated women to settle for less? Why do all of these conversations treat women as completely incapable of changing behavior, but insist that the only way out is for men to do just that.

@brianonhere AOC's best actual move is to continue to say things more left-wing than any Congressperson of note was saying prior to 2016 while being incredibly popular among actual Democrats while a chunk of DSAers are mad - see very popular current Mayors.

crisis for the left in that it’s a realization that she’s not a “movement” representative and “we” have essentially zero feedback mechanism to reach her, for whatever “we” means? maybe

i don’t think something that seems to be happening 100% online can be called a defining crisis. her “left” support is vanishingly small bc the left is, and her left detractors are even smaller. if she runs she’ll be elected in a landslide by ppl who have mostly never heard of DSA
Cole Sandick🌹🇵🇸🇺🇦🇸🇩@ColeSandick

AOC derangement syndrome is a defining crisis for the American left. The fact that a bunch of leftists want to destroy our best shot at the presidency (by far) has almost no precedent, it’d be like if a bunch of conservatives in the 1970s spent all their time attacking Reagan.

@brianonhere to get ahead and higher office is just attack Republicans and don't attack the leadership except in a vague way. I'm hoping someone comes along and goes scorched Earth on the corrupt Democrats. Like Platner or someone new. It would be a waste of time & energy to rally behind her.

I was talking to a center-right European about why I’m a Democrat and was trying to remind him that all Trump insanity aside, Republicans have ideas about things like health care and abortion that are way too crazy for any European party.

@SamMarlow695140 @mattyglesias All those restrictions have loopholes you can drive a truck through and the entirety of the judicial system in Europe is incredibly liberal. I'll give you blue states are more liberal than W. Europe, but 12-14 week bans w/ no loopholes and Federalist judges would be unpopular.

@NYC_DEM99 @ettingermentum That still leaves you with 58 votes. Lincoln and Landrieu could also be unreliable, but even then the Obama senate was the most liberal any Dem president has had. There were almost always 52-56 reliable votes.

@Brien_Jackson The difference between Matt's success and TLP failing putting everything else aside that if you have a publication that only complains about the Dems, you'll get a right-wing audience as seen by its comment section.

@RuxandraTeslo @mattyglesias People may prefer a more elaborate building in theory or a poll, but if you tell them the thing they buy in that building or that house is any more expensive, they'll choose the plainess every time.

just in general, one of my frustrations with my own party is an emergent ideological commitment to not doing things, while I am a member of the party because of a deep commitment to doing things. AI-wise i expect to lose on this, but hopefully not in general

@skaushik100 Lots of people who saw themselves as good liberals in 1960 thought things had gone "too far" by 1975 and complained about the feminists and black activists for asking for too much. You would've been complaining too, even if in 2025, you agree w/ what 80% of those activists wanted

I get accused of being a “centrist” (or worse) all the time, but I’m really just an unreconstructed lib of the sort that was mainstream on the left circa 2010. During the 2010s, I missed the identity train, recoiled from the cultural chauvinism of the very online, and stuck with the belief that individualism is better than collectivism. But I still think class is real and inequality is a problem, striving to accept people as they are is a matter of basic human decency, and that the social project of our time should be to expand the definition of what it is to be an American to encompass the growing diversity of our society.
Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼@Noahpinion

The transformation of liberals into "progressives" since 2013 has seriously been the worst thing to happen to American culture in my lifetime. Just absolutely gutted so much of what was good about this country. End of a golden age.
