I am a repo man. I take cars from people who don't pay their bills. It’s a dirty job, but it pays the rent. Last night, I had an order for a 2015 Honda. I found it parked in front of a run-down apartment complex. I backed my truck up and hooked it. A woman came running out in her pajamas. She wasn't screaming. She was begging. "Please," she sobbed. "I have a job interview tomorrow at 8 AM. If I don't get that job, we lose the apartment. It's my only way out." She looked at the car, then at the baby seat in the back. I looked at my paperwork. The bank pays me $300 per car. I looked at her face. She looked like she was drowning. I lowered the car back down. I unhooked the chains. "The transmission on my truck just jammed," I lied. "I can't tow you tonight. It’ll take me at least 24 hours to get this fixed." She stopped crying. She realized what I was doing. "Thank you," she whispered. "Go get that job," I told her. "And park around the block tomorrow night." I called the bank and told them I couldn't locate the vehicle. I lost $300. But I slept like a baby. People are more important than policy. My 15-year-old son hasn't left his room in three months. Not since the boys at school shoved his crochet project into a trash can and filmed it, posted it with "What kind of guy does this?" while everyone laughed. I'd find him at 2 AM, surrounded by patterns he'd saved from online, yarn everywhere, eyes red from crying. "This is all I'm good at," he'd whisper. His little shop online became his only safe place while kids his age destroyed him daily for doing something they called "girly." Then last week, he emerged from his room holding this gnome outfit. "For the baby," he said, voice barely audible. His first complete costume for his 10-month-old sister. Every single stitch perfect. The pointed red hat, that fluffy white beard, those striped legs with tiny boots. When the baby giggled and reached for his face, my son smiled. First real smile in months. "Do you think it's... stupid?" he asked, waiting for me to confirm what those boys said. Stupid? My broken boy had turned months of torture into something magical. I posted these photos in his online shop while he wasn't looking. Orders came flooding in within hours. "This is professional work!" "Does he do custom orders?" "Tell your son he's incredibly talented!" He's reading every comment now, crying. Happy tears this time. Talking about maybe going back to school. Maybe finding other kids who create things. Maybe those boys were just scared of someone different. To anyone who thinks a teenage boy hiding with yarn is wasting his life, sometimes he's saving it. One stitch at a time. Please tell him what you think. He needs to hear it from more than just his mom.

If your kid doesn't know their math facts COLD, they can't do upper division math Learning math facts ages 10+ is possible but kids' brains are more receptive when less than 8 (yes, really) I know you don't want to... but your kid NEEDS you to help them learn math facts♥️

@Eduventuring04 @MsMurph_ There should be more discussion about this. Here are two sets of questions from from the New York State Grade 5 ELA. One is from 2007, the other from 2024. Quite the juxtaposition.

Why does no one bring this up as a counter when test score declines make the headlines? Is there any decent research on this?

@AllisonETEC 💯 I'm a HS math teacher and it amazes me how many kids can't do 2 x 3 without a calculator. How can I teach upper level math without any number sense?!? 🤔 To add, I tutor MS kids and the first 15 minutes we do multiplication facts drills.

There are a lot of middle school students wasting their time in Math class because no one is brave enough to say that the complete absence of math fact mastery is crippling them every day. They could probably learn them in a week if we really cared.

@FixingEducation Students calling other students "try hards" as an insult. Why, yes, they do try hard and as a result will do more with their life.

@educator4ever36 Forgot to add that his therapist has said that the chaos and bullying was really bad last year. In sessions, he has opened up about it and has started healing from the trauma. I can not imagine the pain and hurt he went through. 💔

@educator4ever36 My child has trauma from his experience in chaotic classrooms last year in a public middle school. He's now in a structured private school, undergoing therapy and thriving!

We talk all the time about teaching trauma impacted students but we NEVER talk about the child who is traumatized AT school because their experience is so chaotic.

@SciInTheMaking One year I worked in a district where your copies were sent to a print shop and delivered to your box. Color, bound, laminated, basically no questions asked.

My teacher dream is for my school to have a copy machine operator. Teachers would send over a PDF file with instructions on how to print it, and before you know it, perfectly made copies would be delivered right to your classroom. 😌

@Beanie0597 Having at least one of each of these students in a class of 32 it is impossible to differentiate teaching daily. When I do direct instruction I can monitor and see who needs extra help. It is the best way to reach them all.

@FixingEducation Our school has told us we cannot give 0s without 2-way parent communication. I have 150 kids and most of them will miss 1 HW or more. I don't have time for all this communication. Our only other choice is to give 50%. Smh

When schools require teachers to offer retakes & accept late work, they ALSO need to provide teachers the extra time those requirements take.

@CraigVanbebber @sage_stage I have been in a similar situation. I get you want to help this kid and I agree, he probably has some things going on in his life BUT I have 149 other students during the day. I don't have time or training to counsel this student. I do care, but I can't do it all. 💔

True. But there are issues. If he was adult I’m all for significant consequences. A kid? I want to exhaust all options such as intense counseling sessions and other forms of treatment. Otherwise we will be supporting him the rest of his life Ive been where you are at. I understand the frustration.

Kid recently got suspended because he consistently walks out of his classes and doesn't come back. Today was his first day back from suspension and he immediately did it again. Will admin... A) Escalate consequences B) Go back to square 1 warnings

@cmoss23 @FixingEducation 💯 If the general public/parents knew what was going on, they'd be sick. As a teacher, my friends don't even believe me when I tell them school stories. The masking is unbelievable. We need to invite parents to be substitute teachers.

@FixingEducation Until there is a class action lawsuit from the parent’s of those that want to learn, nothing chances. But, do those parents even know that the class isn’t able to learn? Very few kids go home and tell their parents what’s happening in class daily

Schools are now structured so that the overwhelming number of student misbehaviors essentially have ZERO consequences. This is horrible for teachers…but it’s even worse for the students who want to learn!

We need to take behavioral management cues from coaches. It should be as unthinkable for a student to lash out and misbehave in a classroom as it is to talk back and ignore their football coach’s directions.
