My latest, "Lady Undertakers of Old Texas" is out now. I did exhaustive research to learn about the personal & professional lives of the 150 or so women undertakers & assistants who worked from 1880-1930. What I found was fascinating. Please check it out! arcadiapublishing.com/products/97814…

New Orleans' famous Cafe Du Monde being open since 1862 is fascinating because the city was actively being captured by Union forces and some guy said "This is a perfect time to open my coffee & beignet stand"

The Artemis II mission reminds me of these 1960s photos of NASA astronauts training in Iceland because they felt the terrain would be similar to what they'd encounter on the moon. The outfits are so great, even some 60 years later.

In a now deleted post on the Pentagon’s Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS), a Sailor working on an EA-18G “Growler” Electronic Warfare Aircraft assigned to “The Gray Wolves” of Electromagnetic Attack Squadron 142 (VAQ-142), deployed onboard the USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), can be seen wearing a morale patch which says: Join the U.S. Navy Save the Big Booty Venezuelans!

UPDATE: Letters from Leo can now independently confirm that the meeting took place — and that the Vatican was so alarmed by the Pentagon’s tactics that Pope Leo XIV shelved plans to visit the United States later this year. Many in the Vatican saw the Pentagon’s reference to an Avignon papacy as a threat to use military force against the Holy See.

NEW: A stunning new report claims that the Pentagon summoned Pope Leo XIV’s top American diplomat and threatened him after the U.S.-born pontiff gave his January state-of-the-world address. Leo used the address to denounce a world ruled by “a diplomacy based on force” and “zeal for war.” thelettersfromleo.com/p/the-pentagon…

"Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby summoned the Holy See’s then-ambassador to the U.S., Cardinal Christophe Pierre, to the Pentagon. The meeting may be unprecedented in the history of relations between the two countries—there is no public evidence of any Vatican official ever taking a meeting at the Pentagon. According to both Vatican and U.S. officials briefed on the meeting, Pentagon brass picked apart the pontiff’s January speech, reading it as a hostile message directed at Trump’s policies. What particularly enraged the Pentagon, one Vatican official said, was the passage in which Leo appeared to challenge the Donroe Doctrine—Trump’s update of the Monroe Doctrine, which asserts unchallenged American dominion over the Western Hemisphere." Day 054, orbit 0835 – After the hunt for eggs, time to hunt down a few misconceptions! Here on the Station, because we’re in microgravity, things are not pulled downward like on Earth… and here’s a surprising fact: hair that naturally detaches doesn’t fall. 🧐 It stays with the rest of your hair. Other forces also come into play, such as the entanglement of hairs and even surface tension when the hair is wet! When I first arrived, I was wondering the same thing: would we see hair floating everywhere?! Well, as unexpected as it may sound: absolutely not! There isn’t even any in the hoodie I use as a pillow!!! Hair that sheds naturally only actually leaves the head when you brush it. I brush my hair twice a day, and I have never in my life collected so much hair on a brush. So don’t worry, there’s no hair floating all over the Station. And fun fact: hair isn’t the only thing that doesn’t fall… dust doesn’t either. It floats and gets trapped in the air‑duct filters until the weekly cleaning… and sometimes an astronaut’s long hair catches it before, like an improvised feather duster would catch it! The result? I’ve never had such dusty hair, and once again, it’s very obvious on the brush! Most of the time, I work with my hair tied back, as you can see in the timelapses and photos taken during working hours. But for communication activities, I like to let it loose to make microgravity visible. Watching the video playback always makes me laugh (sometimes even burst out laughing 🤣 when I discover my very own space hairstyle!) and I hope it brings a smile to your face too! 📷 @esa /@NASA #εpsilon

is this a safe space to admit that I put a lithium ion battery in my checked bag one time, because it was in a hair curler, and the list of banned items only said "no laptops, battery packs, or vapes"? this is why they need more women in the aviation industry

Power Banks on airplanes worry me the most. Never pack them in a checked bag. The cargo compartment has a fire detection system, and a gas fire suppression system (like halon, but I don’t recall if that’s it). Still, we can’t get into it in flight to fight a fire. For carry on, pack it where it’s easily accessible. The idea will be to remove it & put it in a “fire bag” which are pretty effective at containing battery fires. That’s harder to do if you’ve packed it beneath a bunch of stuff that may now also be on fire. If you drop your phone in the seat & can’t find it, do NOT move your seat. You may crunch the phone & ignite the battery. Ask a Flight Attendant for assistance. A cabin fire is at the top of most of our worst nightmares. The Oxygen masks won’t drop – they don’t seal, so it won’t keep smoke out & now we’re feeding pure oxygen to a fire. We’ll be diverting immediately, but it will take time to get on the ground. If the smoke gets too bad, we can “dump” the cabin pressure if needed & clear it out pretty quickly, but that’s a last resort & wont work well below 10,000’ or so. I’ve been told China is starting to ban power banks on airplanes. We may eventually get to that point here. If you have to bring one, make sure it’s in good condition. If you have one of those suitcases with a built in battery, just be aware you’ll have to remove it before checking your bag. If it’s carry on, make sure you can get it out of the bag quickly if needed. Thank you & fly safe!
