The US$30 ZBC radio licence fees gazetted a few months ago has pushed the majority of civil servants over the cliff edge. Government workers are inundating The Mirror with complaints that they can't put their cars on the road this third vehicle term because they are failing to raise motor insurance, road and ZBC radio licence in light of their monthly salaries which are smaller than the sum amounts of the fees. Civil servants can hardly afford third party insurance which is the cheapest and the option now is to dispose their cars and this defeats a Government scheme to empower civil servants through free vehicle import duty. One teacher called to ask if it was possible to ground her car and get an exemption from Zinara while she finds a buyer for the car. Standards of living for civil servants, particularly teachers need to be arrested as they are going down every year. Zimnat cheapest insurances for a car is US$290 a year or US$93 a term, ZBC radio licence is US$30 a term and road licence is US$40 a term.
