Yeah, and those same female offenders would effectively be denied Legal Aid under LASPO for matters like injunctions against an abusive partner, divorce, custody etc., by having to make an extraordinarily complex application to the LAA to qualify for funding via the DV gateway
Ministry of Justice@MoJGovUK

3 in 5 female offenders have experienced domestic abuse. 1 in 3 have a history of drug abuse. We’re boosting women’s services funding by £15m to help prison leavers get their lives on track and away from crime. Hear how @BTNWomensCentre supports women: gov.uk/government/new…

“Far from simplifying the process, the bill risks entrenching a new layer of complexity. It front-loads difficult judicial decisions into a stage of proceedings where uncertainty is often at its greatest. In doing so, it may exacerbate the very delays it is meant to cure” @DrNShastriHurst @lawsocgazette

My favourite moment from yesterday. @NECircuitleader giving the Minister a reality check on Labour’s nonsensical plans to limit jury trials to address the backlog.

It was a privilege to represent the North Eastern Circuit yesterday and make the argument that if only we are given the tools needed we can turn this around without the need to restrict the right to trial by jury.

It was @CGoodwinKC when she was both Vice-Chair then Chair of the @TheCriminalBar who raised the alarm about the cuts to the courts’ capacity. That was 7 years ago. Now she’s @NECircuitleader She knows what’s she talking about. And has always been formidable….

The government's plan to bring down the Crown Court backlog by pushing cases into the magistrates’ court and restricting jury trials is high risk for highly uncertain benefit. New official data shows that the magistrates' court backlog is now at a record of high of 379,437 cases – 70% higher than what it was in the same period in 2019. Read more⤵️ #JusticeNeedsJuries

The crazy, beautiful thin line of air between us and space. Living in orbit I would often look to Earth's horizon, marvelling at how bizarrely thin our atmosphere is. Half of all air is in the first 3 mi/5 km. A common running distance. Sometimes big thunderheads were visible, pushing to the edge of the stratosphere. Above that, the coloured aura of the mesosphere, and then eternal empty blackness. Lit by an occasional star, like a small lightbulb in a vast darkened hall. Let's appreciate and take responsibility for our planet.

Drones have changed how the infantry work, it's true, but this is overblown. During the battle of Pokrovsk, a friend of mine lost a lot of drone op buddies to russian rifleman. The big problem is that too many drone ops neglect basic infantry skills and die for it.
Noah Smith 🐇🇺🇸🇺🇦🇹🇼@Noahpinion

Import thread. As I predicted in 2013, the age of the rifleman is over. Drones have driven riflemen from the battlefield. We are in the age of the droneman.

Sometimes I honestly cannot believe the government is seriously proposing people could be convicted and sent to prison for TWO YEARS (two years?!?) by the Magistrates’ Court with the automatic right of appeal safeguard removed. You read direct research like this 👇🏼 and shudder.

@AlastairJAitken Look at the replies on that account. Whatever their experience, past or present deeds, etc., they seem to just be insulting and criticising people lately. Who knows why, but it's all they seem to be up to, and whatever inferences may be made from that I guess 🤷🏼‍♂️

We may agree or not with these answers but the Lt Gen is a REME officer with two masters degrees. She has also served in Iraq in a Light Aid Detachment with the Household Cavalry and commanded an armoured close support battalion.

Welcome to An Nasiriyah - On this day in 2003, the Battle of An Nasiriyah began. - I post this every year, but I remember watching this on TV as a senior in high school. I enlisted shortly after. One year later, some of those same Marines from 1/2 that I watched on TV, would be my seniors. - That’s 2/8 in the photo. 1/2 was up ahead and Task Force Tarawa was in for a fight. - I’ll be reposting some posts from last year that breakdown the battle as it began. I’m not an expert on the battle but wish to tell the story, if you were there and have anything to add or to correct, please don’t hesitate to do so. - After the Nasiriyah posts we’ll jump into 3/23 Day.
