@bphillipsonMP As a parent of 2 teenage children I am baffled as to why are you introducing another test when teachers are warning this is not what is needed. Please listen to the professionals and respect their expertise. neu.org.uk/latest/press-r…

@SchoolsWeek We need fewer tests and more education. If the Gove revolution of phonics had worked then why do we have secondary year 8 pupils unable to read fluently ? What will these tests tell us that we don’t already know?

@backbridget2025 Not when as Education Secretary she is introducing more testing of our already-over stressed and tested young people. We need fewer tests and more time spent on supporting children and instilling curiosity, creativity and a love of learning,

@educationgovuk As a mother of 2 teenage girls going through the school system I can tell you categorically that another test will not improve reading. It will make reading a chore, will distract teachers from doing their jobs properly and will make some children feel inadequate. Please re-think

Too many pupils are disengaged after moving from primary to secondary school, leaving them without the skills they need for work and life. Our new Year 8 reading test will help teachers to spot struggling readers early and provide pupils with the support they need to achieve and thrive.

@Independent - our schools are too pressured and focused on narrow academic results with not enough space for practical skills and creativity. - girls drop out of hobbies such as sports or music as they are seen as only for the 'best' or they get self-conscious More fun community provision!

@Independent As a mum to two teenage girls this doesn't surprise me. While more mental health provision is needed, it is a sticking plaster. We need to get to the root of why girls in particular are so unhappy. Of course social media is a big part of this, but so is school and community.

I know no one cares any longer and it's not a rule I agree with anyway, but isn't a trade deal such as the UK-US one supposed to cover 'substantially all trade' 🤣 #realarticleXXIV

@AmbMKimani The points about agency are important, but an FTA with the US would not have saved Kenya the tariff imposition as Trump does not care about international law or treaties.

That leverage begins with our energy and minerals. We must decide how to control them, how to process them, and how to use them. Not for others’ disproportionate gain, but to power our own industrialization. Without that, we consign ourselves to enduring weaknes

AGOA is dead. Kenya saw the writing on the wall early. In 2020, under President Uhuru Kenyatta, it sought a Free Trade Agreement with the US, despite widespread skepticism. That call now looks prescient. Africa needs more foresight in its trade and geopolitical relations. 🧵

🚨 The debate on the urgent need to reform International Investment Agreements & Bilateral Investment Treaties is gaining momentum due to the problematic Investor-State Dispute Settlement (#ISDS) mechanisms. @fp2p Thanks @KTChakrabortty! really interesting insights into where we go wrong and right in campaigning. The question I always find most useful is 'what should western governments do to support (and not hinder) the economic development ambitions of countries in the global south?'

@AngelaRayner @JDMahama Did you discuss how the U.K. has recently decided to lower the value of the tariff preference Ghana receives for its bananas, threatening one of its main exports to the U.K. and a key source of foreign exchange and job creation?

A desperately poor country where barely 31% of population has access to reliable power is being bullied into cutting its negligible emissions by 30% in 6 years. Why is this a @WorldBank priority? How is this a Bissauian priority?
