Amid reported calls by the US government for a militia-free government, the new broader government setup, including Zaidi’s cabinet, continues to include prominent militia figures and assets, from Adnan Fayhan in the parliament leadership to Mustafa Sanad as Minister of Transport. This comes amid ongoing designations by the US Treasury and State Department of Iraqi militia organizations, figures, and fixers, and strong calls for "disarming" and "dismantling" the militias, which were seen as an indication of a different policy by Washington toward Iraq. One thing this highlights is that there is no consistent whole-of-government approach in Washington toward Iraq. Different figures and agencies advance different policies and priorities. We will likely continue to see a harsh approach through designations by some agencies, and a more accommodating and even placatory attitude by others. This will certainly be taken note of in Iraq, and various actors will adjust accordingly.

Flores just arrived in Houston from Colombia this evening. This is the first time ever that a TdA member has been charged with terrorism-related crimes and been extradited to the U.S. - history made pursuant to President Trump’s executive order last summer designating Tren de Aragua as an FTO. Flores is charged with providing material support to TdA, a designated foreign terrorist organization, as well as with international drug distribution conspiracy.
