What do people think goalie coaches do? A 29 year old goalie has developed 25 years of habits. Telling them something doesn’t just result in them doing it. Habits need to be broken and then rebuilt through repetition. NHL goalie coaches real job is unqualified psychologist.
Good goaltending is a mix of physical abilities and elite reading and anticipation of what is about to occur. And then making a decision on the best save selection based on that expected scenario playing out.
If an approaching play needs you to hold your edges to create more time for you to read the situation and give you 10 outcomes and then 10 solutions, and you decide to drop down, then you may be cutting your options to 5. So you have reduced your success rate by 50%.
And sometimes a goalie cuts their option from 10 options to 1 and it works. That isn’t good goaltending it is fortunate.
Goalie coaches can point this out, but retraining physical habits and mental discipline doesn’t happen in 10 days.
A great defensive structure though can take a goalie who always cuts their options in half and funnel things into simpler decisions. Clear sight shots. And this has way more impact on a goalies career than their in-house psychologist.

Leaders with good judgment listen for what’s unsaid. They surround themselves with people who will tell them what they need to know — not what they want to hear. And they think carefully about the risks of implementation — even for small projects. s.hbr.org/3buBYK4
