If you're starting to make games, the faster you realize there are multiple other things to prepare for before releasing, the fewer headaches you'll have in the future: - Have a plan for marketing materials; check Steam events - Check how to handle the business/tax side in your country - Know the point when it is worth filing for trademark protection - It is worth keeping notes of big breakthroughs you made while working on your current game that can be used in future games

@HomieSanto It used to be more prevalent for games to do so, but unfortunately more and more games babysit gamers. It's not wrong for some casual games, but I expect some autonomy, not hand-holding when playing open-world RPGs.

I’ve noticed a pattern; when a decent game comes out that expects you to be curious, to be observant and to pay attention, a lot of tourists-turned-reviewers are the first to rage quit, refund, or low-grade that game. Some games aren’t for everyone, but I’m starting to think the pattern is made pretty clear by those who say they don’t like yellow paint, but absolutely need it.

This is the Crimson Desert map (nearly all of it lol) Blue - Areas I've done 90+% of quests in Orange - Areas I've started quests in Red - Areas I've yet to explore This is after 205 hours. Crimson Desert is one of the biggest games ever made, if not the biggest.

I have so much gratitude to people who wrote extremely complex software character-by-character. It already feels difficult to remember how much effort it really took. Thank you for getting us to this point.

@samyam_youtube It's much better to release after 7 months, take all the lessons you can, and start something new. Congrats on the release nevertheless—this is a huge milestone for every indie dev!

my latest indie game release completely flopped with less than 100 copies sold. we spent around 7 months working on it and while there was a lot of stuff i could have done better i learned a lot from my mistakes and will keep on improving!

@zachtothefuller @maximilian_ I can understand this point of view, but to me it feels a little hypocritical—for example, on Steam it's okay to use generative AI to code the game, but not for audio or visuals.

@sysxplore I switched three years ago and haven’t looked back. Everything is so much faster than late Windows 10. I can’t even imagine how slow Windows 11 must be if people say it’s worse than 10.

@jadel4w That's correct, it doesn't correlate with quality—it correlates with fun. There can be high-quality games that aren't fun for many people, so they have low player counts. There can also be low-quality games that are engaging and therefore have high player counts.

Steam player count being visible is doing irreparable and unessesary damage to a lot of games.

@georgebsocial The problem with it is that it’s pushing people to buy newer hardware through negligence of optimization on devs' side, because they can just say "just turn on DLSS!". The stockholders need new ways to push hardware to people.

I see lots of bitching about DLSS 5. To me it just illustrates how many ppl online just want to be unhappy and bitch about everything all the time. I would assume 1) it's optional and 2) you can toggle it so 3) touch grass for fuck's sake.

@LukeStephens Let them. It gives more fuel to the studios which actually want to have some visual identity.

Seriously though, game studios can't be happy about this either... Right?... This literally turns every game it touches into a crappy AI face filter mess. We need to see studios come out against this crap

@RinoTheBouncer Considering all good games coming out, I really appreciate shorter, more polished experiences. With the time I have to spare, even if I wanted to play something, I cannot commit.

@AncientGameplay At this point, Microsoft is actively trying to do worse and worse. I don’t mind; I switched to Linux 3 years ago. Besides some small hiccups, it is a great experience. I even noticed my PC being much cooler and quieter during normal usage and gaming.

To me, late 7th Gen Graphics still & will always look amazing. Graphics continued to get better but never really tried to be realistic. There was a wide variety of art styles, these games look timeless. Mass Effect 3 released in 2012, graphically, aesthetically still brilliant
