Ethiopia’s naval revival with French/Russian help is called “strategic ambition.” Somalia reasserting its navy with Türkiye is called a “protectorate.” Both require foreign-backed state rebuilding. But Somalia’s RISE(military/economy) is unsettling to enemies foreign & domestic

This supporter of Deni, the president of Puntland who’s running for Somalia’s presidency, says he backs the constitution that calls for one united Somalia, yet he’s out here celebrating the division of the country. How can anyone trust people like that to lead a united Somalia? And this is coming from leading analysts in the Twitter space.

🇸🇴 🇺🇸 🇪🇺 This Felt Strangely Familiar — The Americans Had Done the Same Before When private counsel from partners is ignored, and politicians with not many cards in their hands brazenly choose to take — figuratively speaking — the “rugged terrain,” otherwise known in Somali as qardajeex, the partners whose support is needed but whose counsel is ignored sometimes do things that are painful even to the opposition; because after all, the “president” — ex, outgoing, or otherwise — still resides at @TheVillaSomalia, even if as a squatter. Therefore, I was not sure whether to laugh or cry at the EU diplomat’s @AwHirsiSO-esque style of writing, which did away with diplomatic niceties and went straight to the nuclear option and a first-name basis with madaxweynaha muddo-dhaafka (the mandate-exceeding president), and which, with a straight face, refused to agree with what H.E. termed as the focus of the discussion. Instead, she rephrased and reframed their encounter as merely “a briefing he gave” — making it clear she, or the EU, was not buying it. Somalia’s partners were sending a message, much like the attached May 9 response by @AsstSecStateAF directly to @TheVillaSomalia, which called a spade a spade after the government employed the “loo joojin mayo” ploy — or the “it will be because I say so” approach. The Americans were so into it they even responded directly to the president’s Somali-language social media statement. Madam @francescaDM_EU’s late-night response to @HassanSMohamud, as she aptly referred to him, was very much in that same spirit. Somalis convey wisdom through maxims and proverbs, and two came to mind because, truth be told, I am still recoiling from second-hand embarrassment: “Cagtii joogsan weydaa marbay ceeb la kulantaa” — The foot that refuses to stop eventually stumbles into embarrassment. And: “Geed-weyne intaan la tegin ayaa geed-yare lagu qarnaqsadaa” — The wise straightens their cas before reaching the court or the public square. In Somalia, no one will or can stay in office — neither through caqli-caqli (brinkmanship or politicking) nor by force. Still, the president has time to turn his headlights on — because it is in both his best interest and the interest of the Somali people and the Somali state.

Turkey Should Support Current Government —————————————— A significant number of voices are currently slandering the Turkish Ambassador for meeting the Somali President in his office to discuss bilateral relations, claiming that the President has run out of his mandate. Interestingly, many of these critics strongly supported the UAE yet remained completely silent when Israel became the first country to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent state on 26 December 2025 (Reuters). The same voices also stayed silent when Bosaso port and airport in Puntland were used as a major logistics hub and supply line for arms, equipment, and even Colombian mercenaries supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan (Middle East Eye investigation). Meanwhile, the current government has consistently insisted on transitioning from indirect elections to a genuine one-person-one-vote system. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has repeatedly reaffirmed this commitment, stating that Somalia must move beyond the old system and has expressed openness to dialogue with the opposition on restructuring the electoral commission and updating the necessary laws (Garowe Online, April 2026). Given this democratic agenda, isn’t it both reasonable and strategically sound for Turkey to support such a president? Turkey’s partnership with Somalia includes a major 2024 defense and maritime security agreement, military training programs, and significant offshore oil exploration and drilling projects. Supporting a government advancing both democracy and mutual strategic interests in the Horn of Africa is not only logical — it is coherent foreign policy.
Villa Somalia@TheVillaSomalia

President @HassanSMohamud received Türkiye Ambassador to Somalia, Alper Aktaş, who paid him a courtesy visit at Villa Somalia Presidential Palace. The meeting focused on the strategic partnership between the two countries, with discussions covering regional and international developments of mutual interest. The President expressed his sincere appreciation to the Government and people of Türkiye for their unwavering support to Somalia’s state-building, security, and development agenda.

"Emirati interventions in Africa shows that the UAE has not, to date, been a reliable partner for conflict prevention and resolution. Rather, the country acts as a spoiler whose interventions exacerbate local conflict dynamics, entrench war economies and drive state fragmentation." Important new look at the UAE destabilizing approach to power projection in Africa, with the argument that it does not align with German/European interests in Africa. Calls for a suspension of strategic partnerships with UAE. swp-berlin.org/publikation/th…

It is with profound grief that I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the killing of a civilian today in Daynille District by government forces. The victim was exercising their lawful right to peaceful protest. Several others were also reportedly wounded during the crackdown. We extend our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and pray for the swift and full recovery of all those injured. Those who took to the streets today were unarmed civilians expressing legitimate grievances. No opposition forces were present among the demonstrators. The only armed actors at the scene were government security personnel deployed under the authority of the federal government. Among the witnesses to these events were the respected area MP Faiza Jeyte, as well as multiple television stations covering the demonstrations. The use of lethal and excessive force against peaceful civilians constitutes a grave violation of fundamental rights, including the rights to life, peaceful assembly, and freedom of expression. Those responsible must be held accountable. The federal government, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, bears direct political and moral responsibility for what occurred today in Daynille.

Today, former PM @MohamedHRoble and I, together with other colleagues, have been blocked by security forces to go to the site of the planned peaceful demonstrations. This cowardly act has only strengthened our resolve to stop the industrial scale land grabbing and mass displacement of the poorest residents of #Mogadishu by President @HassanSMohamud’s administration. We will continue to protest until the mandate of his kleptocratic regime ends on 15 May. #Somalia

In 1979 Ethiopian population was 34.5M and Somalia was 8M afer 46 year, in 2026 Ethiopia 130M and Somalia 20M. Average Ethiopian household is 4 and average Somali is 7. Something doesn't add up, Either Somalis has been undercounted or Ethiopian census are inflated beyond belief
