A pleasure to speak today at the First Conference on Digital Public Infrastructure hosted by @IndiaUNNewYork. While we celebrate the advancements in digital connectivity, we must also acknowledge that approximately 3 Billion people – or 37 % of the world’s population – have never used the internet. I underscore that – with the ambitious intergovernmental process of developing a Global Digital Compact underway as part of Summit of the Future in September – we have an opportunity to close the digital divide and expand digital infrastructure. @StackCitizen

In 2008-09, there were questions on creating a UID for citizens of India. The questions were for the relevance and the cost of approximately $1 per ID. The UID is known as Aadhaar now and is the foundation for the entire DPI success story. DPIs are also catalysing the growth of a trillion-dollar economy.
