That's how they raise an extra £600m+ in income tax overall. Only income tax diverges. NI, VAT, council tax, etc. are the same across the UK. The "far better social contract" bit? This is where it gets properly dodgy. Scotland does get higher public spending per head (thanks to the Barnett formula + the extra tax from higher earners), and things like free prescriptions and university tuition are nice. But "far better"? Public services have been under the SNP for 18+ years. NHS waiting times, drug deaths (highest in Europe), ferries, education outcomes, and record-high taxes aren't exactly delivering utopia. The "social contract" line is pure political fluff — it's just progressive taxation with extra complexity. Classic SNP move: big up the tiny win for the majority while glossing over the pain for everyone else and the patchy results. You've seen this script before.
