@CUJewsIsraelis I am no fan of Trump but urge people to read Columbia's internal report: Report #2: Task Force on Antisemitism | Columbia University in the City of New York. If even half is true, then sadly, Columbia deserves sanctions for allowing harassment, serious Title 6 violations.

Columbia Jewish & Israeli Students ✡️🇮🇱
To all those blaming Jewish and Israeli students for Columbia’s accreditation being put in jeopardy or saying we “got what we wanted”, let us be extremely clear: This couldn’t be further from the truth. All we wanted was to learn and work at a world-class institution free from harassment, discrimination, and hate. Columbia had every opportunity to address these concerns before hostile political forces interceded. The people who turned our campus into a hotbed of hate are now blaming Jewish students, falsely claiming that we made up instances of antisemitism. They don’t get to blame us for calling them out for engaging in harassment and promoting violence. The Trump administration is trying to make an example of Columbia. The solution is simple. Take antisemitism seriously and enforce existing rules. Be the example of commitment to student safety, well-being, and basic decency to which Columbia claims to aspire.
Columbia Jewish & Israeli Students ✡️🇮🇱@CUJewsIsraelis

🚨BREAKING: The Dept. of Education’s Office of Civil Rights has notified the Middle States Commission on Higher Education that @Columbia no longer meets its accreditation standards due to discrimination violations. It seems that Columbia must now establish a plan to come into compliance or lose its accreditation.

@sfmcguire79 It is very sad that there will be no accountability for these college administrators. Congress needs to pass laws to change that...but for now we can all ridicule them.

WINNING: Matthew Garrett was fired by Bakersfield College for speaking up against DEI. Last year he predicted it would cost them several million dollars. Now he’s received a $2.4 million settlement. Good for him! 👊 “I can’t stop you from making this process painful for me and my family,” he said, “but, in the end, I am unbreakable, and you will lose. And the longer this drags out, the greater the cost for the taxpayers. At this point, you are on the hook for at least a few million dollars.”
John Sailer@JohnDSailer

NEW: Professor Matthew Garrett was fired by Bakersfield College for criticizing a racial climate task force. Now, he’s receiving a $2.4M settlement. Matthew was smeared by his college and punished for his protected (and reasonable!) speech. The settlement is a win for higher ed.

@nils_gilman I'm no fan of Trump, having voted against him five times so far, but we brought this on ourselves. Look at the FIRE data on the % of academics losing jobs or not getting jobs at all due to woke activism (I know several). As FIRE shows, it's worse than under McCarthyism.

@arotherham OK, I'm largely a single issue freedom voter, and 48% of Americans self-censor at work---three times the percent of the McCarthy era, and the Biden admin (including Title IX rules) made it far worse so I cannot vote for either of these clowns (voted Biden last time).

Big problem is that it makes Dem message that Trump is a unique threat to our way of life sound like background parent voices in Peanuts. Like supporting nutso candidates in R primaries, saying Trump's a threat then doing politics as usual (eg 2016) makes persuadables tune out.

A lot will happen next week but an unappealing prospect here is that Biden ends up even more damaged and with a longer road as a result of this intra-party fight but remains on the ballot b/c it is his decision.
Matt Viser@mviser

What is clear from President Biden’s words and actions today: He has no intention of quietly or quickly leaving the race. If donors and Democrats want to alter that, they’re going to have to wage a protracted and public battle. Or enlist the Lord Almighty. Buckle up.

Sowell shows unique brilliance. For this working-class kid raised in integrated settings, Sowell's 1972 Black Education: Myths and tragedies, was the only thing I read in college on race/class that understood people I knew. Empirical. Insightful. Powerful. Empathetic.

@sullydish I am a Sully fan, but recall the quantitative research indicating that Americans seem far more afraid of losing their jobs by offending the left than by offending the right. Defunding the bureaucrats who made that happen is not fascist, though jailing then would be.

@SamaraKlar And be broad enough to apply to many places, even government. I'll have students who apply to 10 jobs get mad when they get 0. I applied to 50 by 11/1, got a good offer, and took it. I had planned to apply to 200. Blue collar life inoculated me against feeling privileged.

@JonHaidt @PsychRabble So let me propose a debate: anti-racism v. merit systems. Academics used to debate ideas rather than cancelling people. It was fun. I'm doing a sort of debate on CRT at a major social science conference, but it has been tough to get CRT backers to take part.

Worth noting: every single recent President to pursue a largely pacifist U.S. foreign policy - Trump, Carter, Clinton, you could even argue later Nixon - has been either a one-termer or impeached. Total coincidence?

For those who are waiting for it, my book on the problem with wokeness is now 2/3 done. I will submit the first draft by Columbus Day at the latest. The news week by week basically writes the book by itself.

@Ed_Realist @JonathanLWai @PsychToday Fieldwork and history indicate otherwise. Ed. leaders encourage people like themselves to go into admin, mostly male, disproportionately athletic coaches. See "Boys will be superintendents" in Phi Delta Kappan. Their normal homophily has unfortunate impacts on schools.

@JonathanLWai @MarantoRobert @PsychToday "On a day to day basis, principals and superintendents ...select which teachers gain promotion to administration. " Teachers get credentials to be administrators. that's on the teacher. No selection process. Administration jobs, unlike teaching, involve affirmative action.

@Ed_Realist @JonathanLWai @PsychToday I would suggest reading The Cardinal Principals of Secondary Education and scholarly treatments of them. For cog. psych you have a point---not for ed leadership, those running schools. I've read a lot on the field's history and spent years in fieldwork & on school board.

@JonathanLWai @MarantoRobert @PsychToday " Further, the roots of modern education theory do not see the intelligence of students as largely malleable. " Um. What? No. Quite the opposite. It's based on the notion that anyone can succeed, because hard work builds intelligence.

I'm stoked to chat with @gmiller on Friday for @psychpodcast about so many topics of mutual interest: effective altruism, existential risks, intelligence, meritocracy, cognitive enhancement, creativity, humor, & mating. Should be a real nerdfest. Any topics we should add?
