@schmidtim @phuecn @timgould_scienc I had an enjoyable visit to @HookyBrewery last year. It is a different experience to drink an ale back in the uk. But I dedicate myself to finding the positives in what independent brewers produce wherever I find them. It’s a tough task but I’m willing to step up.

@phuecn @timgould_scienc @MarkIOgden Focussing on the Greene King IPA. Makes me gag. I’ve also had some bad Hens unfortunately. Broadside was ok. - favourite beer in UK from when I lived there was Black Sheep from Wensleydale. Visited the brewery too. Great place. I was in Cambridge, the land of swill.

Why is there no good beer near UNSW?

@schmidtim @phuecn Having only just discovered the inner west ale trail on my last trip (which I feel was very unfairly kept as a secret from me) there’s got to be a great beer or ale there to everyone’s taste. innerwestaletrail.com

@phuecn You’re talking about mass produced crap like the Fosters swilled by lager yobs in England. This tweet is about finding a proper craft beer place. They’re all west of the CBD, away from UNSW, but close to where I live.

Chemistry is the central science of the modern world, but it has an image problem. ✍️ "The materials that allow the manufacture of just about everything you see were developed by chemists," write Timothy Schmidt (@UNSW) + Jason Dutton (@latrobe). #Echobox=1714426500-1" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">theconversation.com/think-all-chem…

“…salt is cheap, it’s very stable, it’s not toxic,’ explains Nicholas Smith, deputy director of the National Reactor Innovation Centre. Flibe, the name given to a mixture of lithium and beryllium fluorides…” @ChemistryWorld - you really implying beryllium is not toxic!?!? ☠️
Chemistry World@ChemistryWorld

Flibe, the name given to a mixture of lithium and beryllium fluorides, is not broken down by radiation, does not react violently with air or water and can carry more heat than the same volume of water. chemistryworld.com/news/approval-…

And last night on the “other side” of the process at one of two graduations for Science & Engineering this season @CurtinUni . Had the pleasure of reading out 28 graduate research students names and thesis titles.

Scientists want to service the Aus public and discover improvements to benefit society but Australia spends 0.49% GDP on R&D, less than equivalent countries. Aus businesses also invest way less on R&D compared to other countries. We should do better. tinyurl.com/2s4cch77

@SBattenResearch Stu, I do find the crystal flowers & the photo pretty, but you're right that the trolls are out of control. More interesting is the comment about micro electron diffraction - how long until high quality single crystals are not needed & the art of crystal growing disappears?

I've tried to ignore the trolls, but let me reiterate what I *actually* said. I don't find this picture of flawed, intergrown crystals pretty, for the reasons given. If you do, then good for you, but nowhere do you see a criticism of the scientists, the experiment, or the field.
Stuart Batten@SBattenResearch

Meh. I prefer my crystals single. Much prettier and actually useful. Good luck getting useable diffraction from these (which is the whole point of growing crystals). I just see a failed (single) crystal growing attempt.
