For all of miltwit and the military folks who I follow and respect; The reason that the left perpetually wants to cut military spending is that it keeps being used by Republican presidents to do terrible, *idiotic* things that destabilize the world You need to grapple with this

@AliceFromQueens The funniest contradiction in modern self-mythology is watching the rich speak like Calvinists at funerals and John Galt at brunch. Every misfortune is serenely surrendered to fate. The trust fund, however is earned.

@KasraAarabi @APHClarkson The only raison d'etre for most mainstream commentary on #IranWar‌ is that whatever Trump does must be wrong, by definition, and that anyone who opposes him anywhere and anytime must be OK dudes, also by definition. Primary-school playground stuff.

It’s remarkable to watch mainstream media and so-called experts blame all of Iran’s ills on Trump and the war. They talk as though the IRGC has only just risen to prominence, Tehran has only recently pivoted East, and regional destabilisation is new. This is not serious analysis.

@RickACamp @eric_weinberger @Musa_alGharbi But like, a bunch of Israeli guards raped prisoners on tape, one with a knife and I've seen stills. Didn't like that. Then they dismissed all charges. So this seems in the realm of plausibility. Of course the other side makes up shit all the time. But that doesn't make this false

@RickACamp @eric_weinberger @Musa_alGharbi I mean the NYT saying it heavily fact checked this is pretty good evidence for most things in the world. If it were just about anything else we'd all be staring blankly at someone asking for additional proof

@Schulzke @DrMichaelBonner There is a distinct difference between mythology and fantasy. The "omg retards, don't you know it's all made up?" people are not cognoscente of what's at stake with these modern cultural rape rituals.

The Homeric poems do not take place at any identifiable historical moment. Apart from the long oral evolution, they are written in an artificial form of language that was never used by anyone in daily speech. They poems blend material culture, including iron and bronze, different kinds of armour, helmets, shields, &c. anachronistically. They have almost no recollection of writing, nor of public administration. Certain settlements that were prominent in the Bronze Age seem to have been forgotten by the time of final composition. Remember these important facts!
Clint Warren-Davey@Clint_Davey1

Christopher Nolan seems to be deliberately turning the Odyssey into a train wreck. I would propose two different directors: Mel Gibson or Robert Eggers. Mel would have the whole thing in Greek and actually have historical armour. Eggers would make it dark and mysterious, even nightmarish. In both cases it would be extremely violent, like the actual story was.

I think this episode perfectly encapsulates the new right: Trump says he doesn't care about Americans. JD Vance is asked what he thinks about that, and the quote is read to him word for word, but all he can do, because he has no spine, no moral compass, no self-respect for himself as an American, is deny that Trump said it at all. Then Trump doubles down, knowing full well that his base will swallow his contempt for them, and that no one around Trump, least of all dogs on leashes like Vance, would dare ask him to mask his hatred for the average person, while conservative media from The Blaze to The Daily Wire will praise Trump for being so refreshingly candid about how much he hates this country and its people, which they will also call patriotism.
Aaron Rupar@atrupar

Trump on saying he doesn't think about Americans' financial situation: "It's a perfect statement. I'll make it again. Everybody agrees."

I'm baffled by this tweet. Donald Trump's financial disclosure forms show the people managing his money made 3600+ transactions between January and March. Is Eric Trump really claiming that these were all index-fund transactions? If so, why would you need to make 3600 trades?

@eric_weinberger It’s a fascinating rhetorical turn: “who cares if it’s actually rape? Or what does it matter if it’s actually genocide? It’s really bad!” True in sense, but Actually, these are the worst things to accuse a country of. The argument is important precisely bc of that.

Among other things this once again shows that conservatives just don't understand comedy because obviously he's imagining a roast of Obama would just be a laundry list of wing nuts greatest hits against him and....no that's just not how it works.

I want to see a celebrity roast of Barack Obama just to prove how utterly terrified every edgy counter cultural offensive comic is when it comes time to actually criticizing a sacred cow

We know most anti-abortion supporters don't believe abortion is murder because most of them do not support punishing women who have abortions as murderers. No state that bans abortion treats women who have abortions as murderers (or, in fact, as criminals at all). And every time a bill to do so is offered, it dies without ever even coming to a vote. That would not happen if most opponents of abortion genuinely believe it is the moral equivalent of infanticide.

@MathiasRusted bragging about spending per pupil independent of other factors is bragging about waste. they wouldn't put it that way, so I editorialize to draw that out. spending is not a virtue. efficacy is a virtue, and all spending tells you is the cost of whatever efficacy level you're at

When proposing common schools, Horace Mann bragged about their cost-effectiveness. Now, politicians brag about the amount of waste they enable, because people have spent so long acting like money is all that matters they think spending more for less is admirable.
