@andrew_lilico I earn £230k and own a £1.2m house with no mortgage. I pay £96k a year in tax vs less than £5k per year in tax for £30k salary. I’m more than paying my share. When the care costs at 6k a month roll in. Who’s covering it?? Not Mr £30k a year

Any government that taxes people on £30k a year to give the money to people with millions of pounds in assets is not going to find itself very popular for very long.

Do not feel sorry for them. The top 1% of earners pay that income tax, but 'millionaires' hold their money in assets and capital, and live day to day off debt which isnt taxed. Using income tax stats to defend the asset-owning class is a deliberate distraction.

@FeartheBeardy No one should be putting more in than they are taking out. This is why we need higher income taxes and other disincentives to work to raise the percentage of net beneficiaries of government money

Why am i constantly being told when I engage in conversations and online that at 82 I am to old and I should keep my opinions to myself as they are no longer important. Maybe I am missing something and should just let the younger generation get on with it.

@JossSheldon Such a dumb post on so many levels I don’t know where to start. Owning an asset and renting it to users who don’t want to buy is just a service and is subject to supply and demand like anything else. Like hotel rooms, taxis, airplane seats, all kinds of large equipment etc

I love the idea that rent controls might make landlordship unprofitable... + Landlords would be forced to sell their properties. + Property prices would plummet. + Former renters would be able to afford to buy their own homes. + Landlords would be forced to find productive work.
