@McGeePhil

Used to tweet funny things my brother said. Now I just moan about policing, prisons and the army.

@JamJarOppo I remember a recent story that recruits at Hendon had to be briefed to stop using "Sargington", much to the confusion of everyone else in the world who had never heard the term.

STOP TEACHING DISTRACTION STRIKES. YOU’RE GETTING COPS SACKED Distraction strikes are sold as a quick interrupt that generates compliance. In practice, many cops can’t convert the moment into dominant position. The result is a strike loop that looks punitive and achieves little.

@gmhales Errors is probably right - HOCR data drawn from police systems, system updated by supervisors using a drop down where Outcomes 8 (CRD), 9 (NITPI/CPS) & 10 (NITPI/Police) are next to each other, job never looked at again on the police side post-closure to sift errors?

Q for police: what would be an example of the circumstances in which a rape case might be closed as "not in the public interest - police decision". There are v few such cases.

@PropperCop Protip: at the end of every online training session there's a box for feedback. Write in it: "I did not understand this training and do not feel competent in its stated aims. Can someone please get in touch to discuss further learning". They never will, obviously.

I'd better make sure my college learn packages are all done then. They're of such high quality, they'll clearly equip me for anything & give me the experience required as a lowly PC to know exactly what to do during a terrorist attack! IOPC are seriously scraping the barrel! 🤦

A senior police officer is to face disciplinary proceedings for allegedly failing to admit they did not have the experience to respond to the Manchester Arena bombing. The officer, who has not been named, was involved in co-ordinating Greater Manchester Police's (GMP) tactical response to the suicide attack which killed 22 people on 22 May 2017. Police watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which investigated the officer, said GMP had agreed with its conclusion that the officer had a case to answer. The officer is accused of misconduct only - rather than gross misconduct - meaning they would not face dismissal and instead could be sanctioned up to a final written warning. The IOPC said it started investigating after the force voluntarily referred itself on 2 September 2021, following a complaint from family members of some of the victims of the attack relating to police decision making that night. It said the officer was informed they were under investigation for alleged breaches of professional standards around integrity, duties and responsibilities, and discreditable conduct in May 2024. The allegations include that the officer "failed to alert others that they were not sufficiently skilled, experienced or knowledgeable to be able to effectively fulfil the role of coordinating the police response". The IOPC also recommended that GMP make an apology to the families for its "shortcomings" on the night of the attack. IOPC director Amanda Rowe said: "It was vital for public confidence in policing that such matters were subject to thorough and independent scrutiny and our independent investigation looked into a complaint regarding the actions and decision-making of a senior Greater Manchester Police officer on the night of the attack.” "It will now be for a police disciplinary panel to consider the evidence and reach a decision based on all the available information." The officer will face a private misconduct "meeting" - which is different to a public misconduct hearing - held in cases dealing with alleged gross misconduct. Deputy Chief Constable Terry Woods said the outcome of the hearing would be made public. He added: "I want to reiterate the Chief Constable's unreserved apology made on behalf of GMP to the families following the public inquiry.” "We are steadfast in our commitment to ensure we do not repeat the inadequacies identified in the public inquiry.” "We have worked extensively in the years since to continue cementing the substantive improvements made as a result of the recommendations made." @LestorSpigot @MightyMushroomM I had no idea that they existed (assumed it was Serco or G4S) thank you for such a quick steer. Turns out their kit has previously been supplied by OpGear, who also did HMP, which I imagine accounts for the similarities.

@MittensOff You're required to produce three forms of ID to prove you are operating in an official capacity and those documents need to be tendered upon request...basic statutory law. ;)

The Rev. Anton Mittens 🌹👮🎓
More from Private Pike, demanding uniformed officers show him their warrant card under Section 90. There is no general legal requirement for them to do so if they are clearly in uniform, and these officers also arrived in a police vehicle. The Section 90 he yawps is from the Police Act 1996 and deals with impersonation and misuse of police identity, not their legal requirement to produce it when it’s obvious even to stupid boys like Pike who they are. Personally I may have shown my ID to shut him up (briefly), but not at the expense of my safety or others in what is a confrontational situation like this one. In summary, he's a knob.

I joined Wiltshire Special Constabulary. The training was tough - lots of law and systems to learn. Generally good experienced instructors. You need to be able to perform across domains (physical, intellectual) under stress and often alone. It’s tough - though not as tough as when you have PAVA put in your eye.

So yesterday I ended a journey as a Special constable after 7 years of shifts in response. The Dekit process is both more efficient than the MoD but also a little sadder as you archive your notebooks, pass over your warrant card and uniform. It strangely felt more emotional to me than when I left regular military service. An indulgent thread about why I loved being a Special and what the MoD could learn @DefenceHQ @wiltshirepolice

@RogerHu08680547 @InspGadgetBlogs But how do we work out what's lawful and what isn't without sending it to court? That's literally what courts (especially crown) are for. It's Reform soundbite nonsense.

@InspGadgetBlogs I think, if I’d read it correctly, she’s suggesting the police who shoot suspects (lawfully) should not be pursued through the courts - or have I got that wrong…?

Kent Council leader Linden Kemkaran says police should be able to 'shoot people if they feel that that person is going to present a real and present danger to themselves or to members of the public'. Police already have these powers. Reform UK is just becoming ridiculous now.

@gmhales Massive bone of contention in mine is that anyone holding PIP2 can't apply for a non-PIP2 role, preventing people looking for internal roles to transfer to and just going sick instead.

I was recently reminded that there are various policies in policing that may be in tension with officer wellbeing, not least pushing officers to take annual leave rather than sick leave to mask illness. #policeworkforce

@gmhales One of the biggest ones, for me, has always been cancellation of rest days and compulsory overtime to police events planners chose to leave unplanned until, relatively speaking, the last moment. And often, all compounded by not training enough public order officers, etc..

@west_response Schrödinger's intervention: job will stick you on if they become aware that you witnessed something and didn't intervene, job will stick you on if you intervene and something goes wrong. Better just hope that you do everything right, always, and everyone else sees it that way.

@SpamNotAMan @PCWibble Imagine a number of big regional training bases for OST, CBRN, TASER, public order and driving, with accommodation that could be applied for and actually good facilities because of pooling resources instead of just being in a scout hut or something.
