I have to wonder if this is an example of communism being effective when the people are under duress. This is framed as “people helping each other out.” But it’s really “we have to do good deeds or God will punish us for eternity.” Without the duress imposed by God’s ability to inflict punishment, the church loses its ability to tell people how to act.

An influencer on this site is encouraging conservatives to skip Nolan’s Odyssey and rent Troy instead — a theologically neutered adaptation of Homer — because it photographs better. A perfect microcosm of why the right is culturally bankrupt at the height of our political power.

When asked about the possibility of ending up with two Republican candidates for governor and no Democrats, Gavin Newsom responded: “We all have agencies. We can shape the future… I don’t anticipate this need to be the case, but there is a ‘break the glass scenario.’ There’s many people that have a deep understanding of what it would look like if Democrats were locked out, and we’re going to do everything to make sure that doesn’t happen. I’ll leave it there.” It would be nice if he gave a hint about what lengths he intends to go to in order to ensure a Democrat wins. 🤨

If capitalism is so great, why do corporations need so many tax breaks, subsidies, exemptions, grants, legal protections, bailouts, and trade protections? When citizens need these things, why is it socialism?

@MeidasTouch So they must be seeing the Virginia strategy as a win. Pass unconstitutional law. Lose in court. Malign judiciary. Rinse and repeat. This law would be enormously harmful to the court’s independence. It puts the justices in the position of striking down their own term limits.

Scott MacFarlane reports that momentum is growing in Congress for Supreme Court term limits. Several bipartisan proposals would impose 18- or 20-year limits on Supreme Court justices. Rep. Johnny Olszewski says the issue goes beyond any single ruling and reflects a broader crisis of confidence in the Court. “Only 22% of Americans have confidence in the Supreme Court, and 78% want to see term limits implemented,” Olszewski said. The push comes amid growing concerns over ethics issues, controversial rulings, and the Court’s increasingly partisan image.

I am actually mad at myself for reading the post that prompted mine. I am mad at myself for taking the 60s to type it out instead of doing literally anything else with my life. And I’m mad at myself for this reply.

I cannot think of an issue I care less about than the Trump ballroom. I don’t care if he gets it. I don’t care if he doesn’t. I don’t care if it’s privately funded. I don’t care if it’s taxpayer funded. Every second I hear or read about it I all I feel is closer to dying.

@MeansTestRule @DellAnnaLuca @pmarca Not the point of the OP. The OP is about reading *your own* paper before *submitting* it. Not reading the other papers you cite is a big yawn

Mamdani has proposed a balanced budget for next year, with level spending while closing a $12b deficit. Trump's budget proposal increases the deficit by about $300b, with a massive deficit next year of more than $2 trillion. Fiscal responsibility? Mamdani > Trump.
