In today’s #KingsSpeech, the UK government committed to improving the NHS as a service for all. The new government’s commitment to the Tobacco and Vapes Bill is hugely positive and perhaps the most important public health legislation in a generation, with 1 in 4 cancer deaths attributed to smoking. It was also encouraging to hear a focus on reducing waiting times. At @macmillancancer we see and hear about the devastating impact of not having access to timely cancer care that meets people’s needs every day. We know positive cancer care isn’t a universal experience for everyone currently, but we’re ready to work with the new government to ensure everyone living with cancer in the UK receives the best care in the world.

UK cancer care lagging 20 years behind Europe, headline in @Telegraph. People's entire world have been turned upside down. It is a political choice: better is possible. The UK government must commit to transforming cancer care. telegraph.co.uk/news/2024/06/1…

General election = a moment to secure long-lasting change for people living with cancer. Every 90 seconds someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer. But cancer care is at a tipping point. Lives are in the balance and the next UK Government has to make a change. #GeneralElection

"My hope is for everyone else, that people can avoid ending up like me." Delays in cancer care, like @NathanielD93744's are far too common and people’s lives are in the balance. But it doesn’t have to be this way. All political parties must act now on a cross-government strategy so everyone with cancer can be diagnosed and treated quickly.

"My name is Nathaniel Dye, and I'm dying of cancer" "At first I was told I'd have a rough year with treatment and surgery and then be free to live my life. When scans eventually happened further spread was discovered and my prognosis worsened" "It's all but certain that I'll be dead within three to four years" "I try not to think about what might have been if the tests, scans and appointments happened more quickly" "But I know I know waited over 100 days for treatment when the government's target is 62.. And there's a good chance that time spent on waiting lists has cut my life in half - I've just passed by 2000th week and most people will live beyond 4000" "There's a lot being said about sick notes" "If my cancer had been caught early, I would be looking at another 30 years of economic productivity, instead, I'm staring down the barrel or early retirement and early death" "My hope is for everyone else, so that people can avoid ending up like me" "I hope to see a Labour government elected that will cut waiting times by providing more scans and appointments more quickly" "I trust Keir Starmer to effect the positive change that is desperately needed"

The theme of #IND2024 this year is ‘the economic power of care' . Never has there been a greater need for nursing to be seen as an investment, instead of a cost

Happy International Nurses Day! #IND2024 With more than 50 different nursing roles in the NHS, no two nursing careers are the same. Thank you to every nurse for the compassionate care you provide to patients and the public across the country. 💙

Government inaction has left healthcare professionals working in a permanent state of crisis. Unacceptable waiting times for cancer tests and treatment are causing heartbreaking outcomes for people living with cancer. We need a long-term cancer strategy in England to ensure everybody with a cancer diagnosis receives timely, quality care.

This week 90 people affected by cancer showed up at Stormont and demanded that Members of the Legislative Assembly get back to work. People's lives are being put in danger while hospital waiting lists and the cancer care crisis is not being addressed. #WhatAreWeWaitingFor
Macmillan Cancer Support@macmillancancer

Northern Ireland hasn’t had a functioning government for nearly two years and cancer care is in crisis. This has meant the lives of people with cancer are at risk. Politicians must get back to work, resume governing and make the crucial decisions to fix cancer care.
