The most celebrated bands of the last 30 years were rehashes (Strokes, White Stripes, etc). Rock wasn't shut down, because it was "too powerful," it fizzled out like everything else because we stretched it as far as the format can go. Chuck Klosterman thinks that within a couple of generations rock will be a footnote of history like John Philip Sousa's marching band music, and "Smells Like Teen Spirit" won't resonate with your great-grandkids any more than "Stars and Stripes Forever" does with you. The grandkids of Zoomers might never hear a "Beatles" song outside of academic study. The same thing is gonna happen to "movies," as we know them today, and any other transient consumer product you think is integral to the human experience because you happened to be born into it.
