youtube.com/watch?v=MYoA1R… An amazing video on how inadequate the concept of the left-right spectrum is in describing political views. Left-Right really is astrology for politics, I'm going to have to steal that phrase.

@virgoproxy @hartsea82 In the same way people in the west get de-platformed by banks, payment providers and social media for their views , opinions and wages garnished for debts in the west vs someone defying a court order in China? Does the west have a social credit system?

@TheChaosWeeber Trick question, we won’t have a recession either way. Oil sands will push Canada to growth this year and probably for the next thanks to Trump and the Iran war.

@atrupar He actually has a point. Gas could make a sharp drop one month and offset prices of everything else going up. So it will look like there was no inflation, even though it would indeed exist. That is what a win looks like in Trump's Golden Age.

@TheChaosWeeber What matters is that we can reflect on our situation, correct mistakes, and make things better for Canada moving forwards.

@Prominent_Bryan @rmanstett No one is asking WHY our fuel prices are impacted by the Strait of Hormuz. It’s almost like we could do something about it here at home.

@rmanstett No they don't. Pay the extra 10c. Adjusted to inflation gas isn't that high anyway Now my taxes will have to fund a larger deficit because of this dumbass decision

@TheChaosWeeber Its not just driving, though. It also feeds into food and other good costs at a time when the main thing crushing the middle and lower class is inflation and rising costs. I think this is fine, Carney should raise wealth/land taxes that impact those classes less.

People should be driving less to save on fuel costs. Or take transit occasionally. Bike more, walk More etc. Everyone can cut back on car trips. It’s not fair that Canadians need to subsidize drivers even more by cutting gas taxes.

@DarioCpx Theoretically if it is the Treasury that is manipulating oil futures, couldn't it just do so until midterms/impeachment? It seems like the losses the treasury would be taking would be less than a percent of the current deficit.

@DavidZhang360 Crust punk... A society needs to have room for people who just want to fuck off. I know a lot of people don't want to hear this, but it is fundamentally healthy for a society to support this lifestyle.

@TheChristi25019 @TheChaosWeeber Exactly, our democratic institutions are an attempt to ensure that the will of the people align with the outcome of the electoral system but that system is so deeply flawed that there is a massive amount of leeway between what people want and the interests pursued by its leaders.

I don’t understand this country and its politics. I’ve spent YEARS paying attention to Canadian politics and I feel more lost than ever on what Canadians actually believe and what the parties themselves even stand for.

@TheChaosWeeber It's Canada it doesn't matter. Voters will find an excuse to vote Liberals.

@TheChaosWeeber This is precisely what happened south of the border. Republicans have all sorts of fanciful beliefs about what they think they’re voting for. In reality? It’s just whatever Trump wants or can be convinced to do on a whim.

@TheChaosWeeber Politics has only ever been an exercise in doing what it takes to stay in power and this is a reminder that the only thing separating the people from its leaders in a democracy is the electoral system. WW2 has tricked people into believing ideology is the base factor, it isn’t.

I can get why some people oppose forms of PR, for various reasons, but supporting a system where people are routinely elected with 30-something percent of the vote is simply anti-democratic. At the least, absolute power in an individual riding should come with majority support.
