Here is what a tax like this does:
1) It excites people with zero agency and infinite envy. Beware of these people.
2) It will keep middle class people firmly in the middle class with no real chance of getting wealthy if they stay in Washington State. It should be clear that this IS the strategy. Learned helplessness of the electorate will keep Washington State’s current elected officials in office.
3) It will never allow the upwardly mobile of building any assets or real wealth unless they move.
Capping the American Dream is a dystopian and malevolent scheme. It cannot be a valid strategy.
But unless droves of middle and upper middle class people leave Washington State, this strategy will win.

🚨BREAKING: Washington State passes their first ever income tax. Incomes over $1M/year will be taxed at 9.9%. Married couples share A SINGLE $1M exemption, so if combined incomes are more than $1M, you're getting taxed. This will obviously eventually extend beyond millionaires. Return of capital to LPs have been weak. Many at the PM and MD level are waiting around for their carry check from funds that are stuck with positions for now
Until these people retire or move over, there is simply not enough seats being created at the top for middle managers to get promoted to
Doesn’t help either that many of the alt managers have seen their own public stock drop by 40-50% in the span of a few months
They will all look to reduce headcount and cut out some of the fat, using AI as the excuse for doing so

Finance-related job openings are collapsing: Finance and insurance job openings fell -117,000 in December, to 134,000, the lowest level since February 2012. Available vacancies in these sectors have dropped -410,000, or -75%, since the 2022 peak. Openings are now even lower than at the 2001 recession bottom. By comparison, the largest monthly decline during the 2008 Financial Crisis was -125,000. As a result, the finance and insurance job openings rate fell to 1.9%, meaning fewer than 2 out of every 100 jobs in the sector are currently vacant, the lowest since February 2010. Excluding the 2009-2010 lows, this is the lowest rate recorded this century. The finance industry is bracing for more layoffs.
