Year round single sport specialization benefits the adults who can make money off of it at the expense of the child’s development.

A new study came out claiming that 20% of parents think their child will be a division one athlete while 10% of parents think their child will be a professional athlete and/or be in the Olympics. To put that in context of numbers, that means of a graduating class of 500 athletes, 100 will be D1 athletes while 50 will be pros. That is not even remotely close to happening.

Youth sports are a mess. Not because of the kids—but because of the adults. The loudest voices are often the ones who know the least. And the people who actually try to do it right? They’re the ones who get criticized the most. It’s backwards. It’s bonkers. And it’s burning good people out.

Also, I wish HS and AAU coaches would be honest with their players and parents about their players’ potential college level. You really set kids (and parents) up with unrealistic expectations. Please and thank you.

COACHES: Coaching today's generation of kids is about relationships and connecting with them. Players will still "run through walls" for you if they know, like, or trust you. It's not enough that you care about them. They have to know that you care about them.
