Very excited to have this live! I think it brings together important priorities in housing that can serve as a basis after this moment. Check it out, I also have a quick blog recap in the next link. /1

1/ Today, ESP released Building Affordability, our new policy agenda on housing, which tackles the two causes of unaffordability: broken markets and broken incomes. Written by @chao_becky, @Mtkonczal, and @resnikoff, it shows how policy can expand supply while also directly protecting tenants.

@talmonsmith Mostly a contraction in insurance employment. Also a fairly big decline in real estate, rental & leasing. Not much of a change in what we traditionally think of as finance (big shifts within that though, away from commercial banks and toward brokers, fund mgmt etc)

The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, the most consequential housing bill in decades, is now law... so what happens next? In a new guide at @NAAHL, I break down the 124(!) actions agencies must now take to implement the bill by agency, type of action, and deadline

@riccoja @TheStalwart Yeah I wrote in it that I'm not sure if a writing plateau is good or bad. Bad in that we're stuck with it becoming a norm in routine communications. But good that humanity still means something!

I used to cynically think “AI writing sucks, but it’s better than 90% of people at it.” But I’m less sure. I think it’s gotten worse. At least in the Anthropic family, 4.8 and Fable 5 outputs are so larded with Claude-isms I increasingly get straight up unintelligible outputs.
roon@tszzl

hypothesis: the writing styles of language models are basically fine, they weren’t better in some halcyon before times. we just use them so much that we get annoyed by their mannerisms. they need to have a superhumanly diverse idiolect to not become grating

@lizzybetsdad I lived around the corner from there for a period early aughts. Hard Boiled Records, Victory's Banner, Roscoe was absolutely one of the best streets.

@TheStalwart @max_spero_ Not even near the frontier of complicated programming anymore, and I could feel the step up in Fable tasking out and scoping a coding project. The writing was basically the same, even with more prompting and materials than most will give it.

@TheStalwart That said everyone who is going to use AI should just load an anti-slop skill and execute it on anything they write. (We need one for design as well, the next frontier of this mannerism issue.) github.com/NousResearch/a…

Relevant to my interests: New @DAcemogluMIT /@davidautor paper finds that lower birth rates actually lead to HIGHER wage growth and GDP per worker, which they hypothesize has to do with labor scarcity leading to higher productivity. nber.org/papers/w35401

@mtkonczal I have a git pre-commit hook now that makes sure every document in my case file repo has a markdown sidecar. This makes it way easier and better at grabbing case info from the files.

New post: I think I've finally gotten my AI process as a policy researcher in place, and between HTML dives into research, git diffs on edits, and elaborate rehearsals on arguments, I wanted to share it all with you here. Plus a question: has AI writing skill maxed out? /1

@mtkonczal Coincidentally, I also converged on markdown and git for drafting legal documents, pandoc to compile to pdf (or docx occasionally). Got a whole repo set up for my casefiles. Another trick here for document-heavy work like I do is having it create markdown sidecars for everything

Last, my attempt to automate viral American Time Use Survey posts on Substack didn't work as well as I hoped, even with Fable 5 powering it, so I think human takes will still be around for a while longer. cc @DKThomp. 4/4

2 last things: is it too late to vibe-code an app? I think posters wrapped those up by February. But I did have one that needed Fable: an IDE for writers with git and terminal built in, so you can automate editing and track the changes. Love feedback! /3 github.com/mtkonczal/Draf…
