I am absolutely over the moon as I share this wonderful news with you all. My 13-year-old daughter, Nelly, who is in Grade 8, has just been selected by the University of Toronto - @UofT in partnership with the Toronto Catholic District School Board - @TCDSB to start taking classes this summer. This is such a huge honor and recognition of her hard work and academic excellence. It is truly an exciting step toward what I am sure will be a bright future, including her eventual direct entry into the university. Honestly, I thought my birthday and Valentine’s Day could not get any better, but Nelly’s acceptance has taken this year’s celebrations to a whole new level. Nelly, you are such a brilliant and inspiring young mind, and I could not be prouder of you and everything you have accomplished. This is the greatest gift any parent could ask for, and I am beyond grateful. A big thank you to the University of Toronto and the Toronto Catholic District School Board for giving my daughter this amazing opportunity. Your belief in her potential means so much to us. And to everyone who has sent warm messages today, thank you for sharing in our joy and making this day even more special.

@FrankGashumba We have been affected by this behavior where someone would spend sleepless nights reading for PLE and ordinary level, we reached Advanced level when our brains and neurons were worn out. Raise the concern Frank#

Please parents, this madness MUST STOP. Stand up and be counted. Schools don't own our children. It has bothered me for a while, when you browse all search engines, a kindergarten is a place where kids go and have fun If it's a place where kids should go and have fun, why would our toddlers wake up at 4:30am to go to school? Surprisingly, some parents after preparing the kids for school and the van picking them up, they go back to their beds and sleep. To a certain extent some parents don't even see their kids when they are going to school because they are prepared by maids and helpers. It's a common norm in Kampala, the van will pick these toddlers from different areas forexample Munyonyo, Mbuya, Luzira, Nasana and drop them to Namirembe road where the school is and by the time the kids reach, they are already exhausted. Parents must raise up and stop this madness. There is a new tendance of lower primary kids for example P.1 and P.2 having weekend classes. When do these kids participate in extra cocurricular activities fore example football, netball etc? If I am to recall during our school days, after each period we had playing time for example after break, we had 30 minutes of play and an hour after lunch and we go back to class. Which school in kampala still does that these days? Homework started as a joke and now it's a norm where these kids are given homework on a daily basis. When do these kids ever rest. Look at a primary kid who leaves home at 5:30am and returns at 8:00pm and still has homework they need to do. I remember very well during our O' & level in Masaka Aghkan Senior Secondary School. Sometimes I pass via Greenhill primary school and find our kids with heavy bags on their backs as if they are pilgrims on a pilgrimage. This subjects kids to depression at such an early age due to their minds being over worked. What is even more painful is that these kids are not being taught to be innovative, it's plain cramwork of the same things over and over again. If taking these kids to school very early in the morning results into high innovation and developments, the social media apps like Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram and search engines like Chrome, Google among others would be developed by Ugandans which is not a case in point. Finally, during our days at school, they used to tell us "to be at the right place, at the right time and doing the right thing" and if it's so, why is it that when kids breakoff for holidays, they are still given holiday packages and sometimes holiday coaching. If you are reading this post from Europe, Asia, North America, USA and other parts of Africa, kindly share with me your experience. I will dig deeper into this Monday 5th August, 2024 on radio 4 (103.3 Fm) from 9:00am to 11:00am. If all people would give out their thoughts and understandings like the way you do it Burora without talking out of bias then Uganda would be a better place. Thanks for your insightful thoughts about this topic which is broad and has to be tackled from the roots.
Burora Herbert Anderson@harderHB

Schools open tomorrow, yet education that is meant to be a basic requirement is not only a cash cow for the Leaders that have turned it a commercial sector, made unaffordable left for the privileged and not a right. We risk a backward, Less productive population and thus a continuity of unemployable, Unemployed, Unskilled, Uneducated generation ahead of us. Next week as my work requirement, I’m supposed to arrest Parents who have failed to take their children to school because parents can’t afford to pay for development fees, Library fees, Building fees, Board of Governors Fees etc and School Fees on top. Consciously how am I supposed to do this? The development we have cannot be appreciated because it does not make sense to the majority of the Population because they lack in all aspects the necessary tools and skills to take advantage of them to be seen as an opportunity for development. Case in point, Street lights are vandalized by what we feel comfortable to call lumpens and we rush to fix the temporary problem by arresting and dumping in prison but forget to ask ourselves why these people don’t appreciate what could be a societal solution. We appreciate the work @GovUganda and @Parliament_Ug does towards putting in place legal systems. But the biggest question is, have the two bodies done enough to address emerging issues most especially protecting the Education sector from being captured by the capitalist? Today education has turned to be a privilege for a few. @GovUganda schools have been left without enough to deliver credible and quality education but left to be a dumping center for the failures and less privileged to assume that they also went to school. Last year, there was a discussion about regulating School fees structures by Parliament. But what happened? Why did parliament shelve the discussion? Is it because Parliament is guilty of being and accomplice in disorganizing the sector because they own schools? When President @KagutaMuseveni appointed Hon. @DrMuyingo in the education sector we thought that maybe being and educationist, he would front reforms to make education not only a National Requirement and Right but also accessible to the poor and the rich. How can he do it if his schools are part of the biggest scavengers in the country. How do we expect the Good Minister to reform education that he is sucking from? I shouldn’t be misunderstood for attacking the minister. Cabinet Ministers and Members of @Parliament_Ug have turned to be firefighters most especially on matters affecting them individually but not as a public outcry. Yes MP own Schools, Yes Ministers Own Schools, Yes Commissioners own Schools, Yes District Education Officers Own School, Yes key stakeholders in Education own schools. Yes they are all Scavengers. How do we expect them to be be remorseful about their Prey? The fight for the Right to Education should be held on top of the national debate. We have a Generation that is not educated, How shall we get into the Middle Income Status without an Educated Population? If Ministers and Members of @Parliament_Ug are remorseful about the future of this country as a whole, they should without procrastinating immediately regulate the thuggery that has capture education and rendering the biggest population to forever remain backward.
