To clarify: this is during the race. They are pro athletes paid to race: if the race doesn’t “count”, they stop. Amateurs wouldn’t stop. So it does make sense what they do. I think the rules need to be revisited if the goal is “sports”.

I have feelings about this behavior.

As much as I would love nothing more than to see this happen… Tadej, Remco, MVDP, Del Toro, even WVA…

@NickyCycles @dabearsblog You're completely inaccurate with your post. The soft tissue problems are a 12 month problem. In his first 3 seasons, he missed a total of only 9 games and half of those were due to a broken hand - not exactly a "history."

I genuinely believe that we all still underestimate Pogačar as an athlete. His rides on Plateau de Beille and Alpe d'Huez are probably the greatest athletic performances a human has ever produced 🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m well over two decades into every day Tour de France watching. Such a great three weeks every year. Sad to see it end today but as I said earlier it was a spectacular final stage. Closing out 2026 w/ some thoughts: Tadej Pogačar: not much left to say that hasn’t been said. The debate isn’t is he the greatest of our generation, it’s where he ends up in greatest male cyclist of all time discussion. Maybe his most impressive performance this year to me wasn’t his domination over the field but that he seemed genuinely excited to take on being a domestique to a lift up and/or protect a teammate’s GC position on three different occasions, so speaking of Isaac Del Toro: I will be stunned if he doesn’t put a Grand Tour win on his CV by end of 2028 (prob quite sooner). The Del Toro-Seixas rivalry is going to be really fun in a few years, which leads me to… Paul Seixas: don’t know how he could have realistically done any better as a 19 year old in his first Grand Tour. Seems to be handling the hype and pressure well. And rooting for him in the future because I want to see the scenes of a French winner in the TdF soon. Remco Evenepoel: thought the whole thing was about to unravel for him in the first week when he blasted teammates and tactics. But he got it together mentally and physically and was clearly the best of the rest. Really showed a lot in the last two weeks. Quick hits - Mads Pedersen, if the Tour couldn’t have Wout Van Aert he was the next best thing. Richard Carapaz, the best third week of the TdF, turned EF team performance from blah into a top 5 of this tour. Tim Merlier, when in form the best sprinter in the world right now. Visma - one good day and then yikes…which is a bummer, team full of guys I really like. #TDF2026

I went to the Tour de France last week and it feels like a perfect microcosm of how Capitalism and Socialism differ (and why America is diverging economically and stagnating socially). As an American I couldn't believe how poorly they monetized the event. You have millions of people watching and 99% of them watch for free. The result - the median rider in the event is earning $250K a year, but the public has an event that is loved and accessible by all. The broader result is you don't get the private (and public) investment that coincides with such events in the USA because it's not being monetized well. That is, the teams earn less, the riders earn less and municipalities hosting earn less. So the aggregate result is everyone is poorer, on average, in the long-run because they don't capture the economic value of the event well. BUT, the Europeans love their bikes. Boy do they love their bikes. And you see the happiness and social value of making this a public good instead of a private profit maximizing endeavor. So there's social value in NOT monetizing the event that **arguably** makes it a better overall social value than the Capitalist model. In short, the American model creates a wealthier, more capitalized industry, while the European model sacrifices financial maximization to generate a widely distributed, unpriced public good. Which is better? Most certainly a mix. The hard part is getting the balance right.

@cullenroche I think your analysis is spot on. That’s why everyone HATED the World Cup this year. Football is already well monetized while remaining accessible. Americans this year totally destroyed it favoring maximizing profits over balance.
