Actually, American education is traditionally quite demanding, it just tells you to find your passion first and then push yourself to the limit of your talents, as opposed to indiscriminately maximizing test scores and then picking a high-status career. Personally I think our way yields better results, but grind culture is absolutely going to kill it off soon if immigration continues.

the problem with not giving terrorists and assassins the death penalty is that they end up getting pardoned by some leftist president a few years later. happened for so many of leftist terrorists in the 70s (especially in Europe). in the US there were pardons/commutations by Clinton (many FALN members, Susan Rosenberg, Linda Evans) or Obama (Oscar Rivera) and went on to cushy jobs at NGOs or academia.
this is one of the underrated benefits of the death penalty: it's final, and your political opponents can't undo it later to spite you
