Tonight will be a night of destruction. Irani officials are extremely angry. I have never heard such anger in them in any of my interaction with them of years. Here’s the U.S. play that I am thinking of in the Strait of Hormuz (one of the possible scenarios): 1- U.S. will takeover one or more of the Islands (some are contested between the UAE and Iran like Abu Musa, Tunb et al) around the Strait of Hormuz to ensure “freedom of navigation”. 2- Once they have done so, US will move quickly to get a UN mandate to send in peacekeeping forces in these islands to ensure freedom of navigation. At the moment it is increasingly looking like all veto power-wielding states will back this. 3- Once the peacekeeping forces move in, America can scale down its presence and pull out declaring a win. This is the bird’s eye view of the strategy that I see. Kharg doesn’t figure into this because I think Kharg takeover will not be supported by anyone at the UN and it has nothing to do with freedom of navigation (where USA can invoke universal laws in the interest of all UN members).
