A black man made a sexual advance on 17-year-old Raelynn Cameron at a party. When she rejected him, he stared her down, pulled a gun, and shot her in the chest, killing her instantly. Javone Duncan now gets just 15 years for second-degree manslaughter. A young girl’s life ended over a rejected sexual advance — and the system barely punishes it.

Black and Brown folks' voting rights continue to face escalating threats nationwide, as Trump and the far right-wing advance their effort to restrict voting access. @Chicago must stand firm to protect the progress our people have fought for over generations. There was no greater leader in that fight than the late Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., and I am proud that we came together as a city to celebrate his legacy by moving proactively to protect voting rights, expand civic participation, and ensure every Chicagoan has a voice in shaping our future.

Today, I’m reintroducing my Federal Death Penalty Prohibition Act with @SenatorDurbin to get the federal government out of the business of executing its own citizens & save the lives of the people failed by our criminal legal system—like Tony Carruthers.
Tony is facing execution tomorrow in Tennessee, with the state so far refusing to test critical evidence that could prove his innocence.
There is no time to waste to save Tony’s life. @GovBillLee must heed the calls of Tennessee residents & our broad coalition demanding his planned execution be halted.
The death penalty is a racist, discriminatory, & deeply flawed punishment that disproportionately impacts Black, brown, & low-income people.
And with states across the country in the midst of an unprecedented execution spree & Trump shamefully reviving federal firing squads, Republicans are doubling down on state-sanctioned killing instead of ending it.
That’s why Congress must move with urgency to pass this bill to save lives & abolish the death penalty once & for all.

We still haven’t had a real hearing on the rise of white supremacist violence, the lives lost, or the extremist groups empowered by dangerous Republican rhetoric.
But somehow, Republicans found time to hold a hearing claiming the Southern Poverty Law Center is “manufacturing hate.”
Meanwhile, they’re defending an almost $2 billion taxpayer-funded slush fund that could put money in the pockets of January 6 extremists — including people tied to white supremacist groups that attacked our democracy.
Y’all can miss me with the performative outrage.

He’s running for his life, begging for help, and instead of saving him, the police handcuff him while he bleeds out because the attacker claimed “racism.” They let him choke on his own blood. No urgency. No humanity. Just cold, ideological policing. Months later? Still no names. Still no suspensions. Still no accountability. Meanwhile, the same UK police have arrested over 12,000 people for social media posts. They move at lightning speed to jail citizens for tweets and online comments, yet they can’t even name or discipline the officers who allegedly let a stabbing victim die in handcuffs on the street. This is the definition of two-tier policing: aggressive against ordinary people speaking online, but protective when it comes to their own failures and protecting the narrative. The British people deserve real justice, not another cover-up. Justice for Henry Nowak.
