I hope by now everybody knows who are Kukis?
To re-iterate, originally Kuki is an umbrella term given by the British in the 19th century to recognise the Kuki-Chin-Zo community that we know today. This included Thadou, Paite, Simpte, Gangte, Vaiphei, Hmar, etc. tribes. Kuki, being an umbrella term, doesn’t have its own ethnic identifiers such as culture, language, etc. so when the Kaka Kelelkar Commission reorganised Manipur’s ST list in 1956, the separate tribes listed above were listed as ST and the term Kuki was removed as it was not a tribe.
The term Kuki we know today is different from the Kuki that existed pre 1956. Today’s Kuki, also known as AKT (Any Kuki Tribe) is entirely a subset of the Thadou community together with the recent illegal immigrants from Myanmar, many of whom were imported by the Kuki militant groups as poppy cultivation and drug manufacturing experts.
So today’s 𝐊𝐮𝐤𝐢 = 𝐀𝐊𝐓 = 𝐬𝐮𝐛𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐮 + 𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐭𝐬
The voices of Thadous who do not subscribe to the Kuki ideology but want to protect the Thadou identity and believe in peace and harmony among the coexisting communities and believe in the idea of Manipur are intimidated and suppressed by the armed Kukis, sometimes giving them capital punishment for breaking their dictates! The recent killing of the three Thadou church leaders was allegedly an example.
See below an article by a proud Thadou diaspora member about how it feels to be a peace loving Thadou in Manipur.
