If the concern is that you should be spending more time socializing in the real world - well, this applies even more to older teens and adults in their early 20s than it does to 12 year olds. These are formative years where the positive returns to variance and risk taking are at their highest. You should be aging into a social media ban and then out of it if anything
The problem is that children remain the one group in society where in the liberal, progressive Anglosphere public opinion still accepts paternalistic and involuntary, mandatory policymaking in the private sphere. Banning phones for 25 year olds seems too extreme. But for a 12 year old just seems like plain common sense
The real question - and proper framing of this issue - is not Are you mature enough for a phone or the internet? but Are you too old and mature for it? But no one wants to ask that question.
