@JasonGregor Playing defensive hockey is hard work and in a lot of cases not that exciting. Not sure how you get buy in with a guy like McDavid and Leon on that team. I know Leon has said he would like to win a Selke but I haven’t seen a concerted effort to be that kind of player.

One key factor that should be discussed among management, coaches and players is that the Oilers have never had a consistent defensive identity. Have had glimpses, but nothing that lasts. Until that occurs, Cup will be hard to hoist.

@MLarkinHockey Is it that easy to find a stud goalie? Who’s giving up their starter for Edmonton? And for what return? Nurse?

Said it before and I’ll say it again: the degree to which the Oilers have neglected their goaltending and cheaped out on duct-tape fixes during McDavid era is irresponsible. 99 had Fuhr, 66 had Barrasso, 87 had Fleury Reward your generational star with a STAR goalie
Michael Amato@amato_mike

I'm not even sure how they've done it because it's been such a low bar, but somehow the Oilers goaltending has managed to get significantly worse in each of the past three postseasons: 2024 - .902 2025 - .888 2026 - .867

🚨#BREAKING: Sources close to Connor McDavid and his family have indicated that he does not intend to re-sign with the Edmonton Oilers once his current contract expires in 2028. McDavid signed a two-year, $25 million extension with the Edmonton Oilers in the off season.

@frenttrederick @OilerAnalytics The Dolphins gave Dan Marino “the best chance” as well. We all know how that turned out. McDavid will not see the second season of that deal he signed. He will be dealt next summer. Connor will not be the Dan Marino of the NHL. He will leave to get his cup.

Since 2021, the Oilers have played in 85 playoff games, more than any other team. That's not a fluke, that's sustained excellence. McDavid’s best shot at a Cup is in Edmonton.

@MarkPavelich @cmcdavid97 No way he sees the second year of the new contract without a cup. The last two summers were also considered “an important summer”. Fact is it’s not that easy to make the moves that need to happen. Who wants Nurse? Where does the stud goalie come from?

Here’s the problem. The second you start calling your own team “Average” with high expectations, you’ve already lost the room. That’s not leadership—that’s distance. You never heard Wayne Gretzky do that.
Or Mario Lemieux.
Or Michael Jordan.
Or Tom Brady. Those guys didn’t separate themselves from the team—they dragged the team up with them. And there’s a reason they all have rings. Multiple. People forget something real quick. When Gretzky left Edmonton, the Oilers won the Cup second season after. Let that sink in. Right now, Connor McDavid is the best player in the league. No debate. But if the mindset doesn’t shift, he risks becoming something nobody wants to be— The most talented player of his era with a highlight reel full of magic… and nothing to show for it when it matters most. Someone had to say it. 🏒 #LetGoOilers

@Bob_Stauffer @EdmontonOilers An example of just how little depth the Oilers actually have. Top guys didn’t perform and the rest of the team could only gather enough energy to win one game convincingly after getting down 3-1.

The @EdmontonOilers season comes to an end. PK Killed them! ANA PP 9/18 in the series. EDM compromised at Center: McDavid, Draisaitl and Dickinson all played through significant LBI's, Henrique-out. Ducks were better, especially on home ice. Tough season overall in Oil Country.

The NHL has an embellishment/diving/flopping issue right now. There is no reason to not dive until officials get their act together. 1. You embellish and they get sucked in and only call the other guy. 2. You embellish &’they take both. So what’s the downside of doing it?

@JasonGregor Every defenceman in the league gets pummeled each game and I’ve said the same thing. Why? This is called at the lower levels and kids are taught to not do this but then they get up to the junior level and the rules change. It’s moronic that’s for certain.

Why does NHL allow blatant hits from behind? Ref is right there. Happens all across the NHL. Utterly moronic how the league continues to allow it.

That is legitimately some insane shit from the official. He waves it off... and then just changes his mind? Refs just changed their minds for fun & the Oilers get fucked. WILD

@dstaples That puck was definitely in. No different than the NHL calling good goals for picks they can’t see in a goaltenders glove. The point about a ref seeing it is secondary. That puck was in and the right call happened in the end. Period.

I'm by no means blaming him because he certainly isn't the issue and I'm only bringing this up because I can't really get my head wrapped around it but when Leon was out of the lineup this year the Oilers seemed to be SO MUCH BETTER DEFENSIVELY, I just don't get it.

Can Oilers get back to a 3-1 game? Reel it in defensively? They have to because Ducks are younger, faster and better than the Kings were.
