@Eric_Erins is that what these are? I saw so many of them canvassing for the march election and thought they were so quirky and strange but couldn't for the life of me figure out why they were built that way.

Chicago has such a funny built environment for a big city. You can buy...a kind of janky old carriage house from the 1880's that's built all the way at the back of an otherwise empty lot on the alleyway for $180K.

you may have noticed that all prominent right-wing personalities on here are suddenly attacking same-sex adoption, almost as if they received their new directives overnight, but I'm sure it's a coincidence

@evancotthem @aarmlovi usually side by side duplexes are sharing what is effectively and interior wall vs townhouses which share an exterior wall or have a party wall between them usually side by side plexes are a more suburban occurrence too

@aarmlovi What demarcates a plex vs a townhome? If there are two homes side-by-side sharing a wall, it's a duplex, right? But if I add 4 more in a row are they townhomes? (or rowhomes?)

Chicago is the poster child for why "Plex" reforms—duplex, triplex, 4plex—fail nationwide Plexes aren't just infeasible to build new: Most existing plexes are infeasible *NOT TO TEAR DOWN* (!) Townhouses or midrises are so often the highest & best uses in most submarkets 🤷‍♂️

These buildings were once most 2-flats but have increasingly been converted into single-family homes. While it’s good that affluent families want to remain in the city rather than move to the suburbs, in high-cost neighborhoods, scarce and expensive land is being absorbed by $1M+ single-family homes. This limits the overall supply of family-sized housing and pushes prices even higher and pushing many families out

@2024dion I gotta say, Lee's Summit being its own UA is so wrong I don't understand how that happened. Any ideas?

@2024dion the best thing about UAs is that they are more intuitive to people who live in an area. Nobody would bat an eye at calling Belton or Gardner part of KC but if you say Richmond is people are gonna think you're crazy even though they're nearly as far from KC

This is just by every metric *you’ve* defined. The vast majority of the trips taken by urban residents are within 3miles. For short trips and not needing to find a space for a 16x6ft vehicle, they’re objectively better than driving
critical urbanism@criticalurban

Bikes are objectively inferior transportation by every metric. Slow, minimal carrying capacity. Can't carry passengers. Exposed to the elements, the rain, snow, sleet, heat, and cold. It's awful. Incapable of practical regional access.

clearly this is deeply serious and fact based analysis that isn't undermined by basic factual mistakes like Kansas City having Kansas as it's state or the fact that basically all of the MSA and CSA numbers are wrong

Tesla's Robotaxi is preparing to reach ~50% of US Population Tesla is hiring for the role of Data Collection Supervisor, Self-Driving (and previously for roles called AI Safety Operator) in many cities across the country. These cities cover about 50% of the US population (depending on whether you look at MSAs or CSAs). This table also shows the new cities (in green) where they've begun hiring. This helps to explain where all the Cybercab engineering test vehicles that @JoeTegtmeyer is seeing every day are going! Note: MSA ("Metropolitan Statistical Area") is a city's footprint while CSA ("Combined Statistical Area") reflects a network of metros acting as one regional economic system.

@KaganKazgin @ChicagoDPD It's ruining the American dream to approve of an apartment building replacing a currency exchange on a parcel across the street from a 24h el station served by three lines?
