By providing communities with proper waste infrastructure,we stop pollution before it enters the water. With generous support from United for Climate Justice Global,the Climate Crisis Club donated over 200 dustbins to communities along Lake Victoria.Each dustbin placed in high traffic areas, fish-landing sites, and markets and shops serves as a daily reminder that waste belongs in a receptacle. Yet hardware is only half the battle.The true heart lies in community engagement.We work with local leaders to ensure bins are used and maintained by fishermen, vendors, and families who rely on Victoria for water and livelihood. Why Every Bin Counts Lake Victoria,Africa’s largest lake, is choking on plastic. Thousands of tons of plastic waste enter each year. Plastics are consumed by fish, introducing toxins into the food chain a public health and food security emergency.Over 80% of communities in the basin lack a common litter bin. With inadequate collection, 90% of waste ends up directly in the lake. A Deeper Commitment Our dustbin donation is one pillar of a broader strategy. Across the region,youth groups in Homa Bay turn invasive bamboo into sustainable products,and 57 young people now manufacture dustbins from recycled PET bottles.This initiative is rooted in climate justice vulnerable communities have a say in solutions.We advocate for a circular economy where waste is a resource. Looking Ahead Reversing Lake Victoria’s damage requires a multi pronged approach.Dustbins stop new plastics;we also commit to cleaning legacy pollution.We plan regular community cleanups and circular economy workshops to empower youth. Restoration hinges on active participation.When locals own a cleanup,they witness pollution’s impact directly fostering responsibility no top down policy can replicate.
