Yes, they have made the appropriate investment in their infrastructure by drilling the shit out of the North Sea. The UK? Not so much. I work with our DNO very closely because I'm a nationwide solar installer and the servicing and warranty provider for one of the biggest global battery manufacturers. I see the supply chain end to end for renewable products and its an abomination especially EVs, you've swapped strapping well paid men in the north sea for throwing small African children down a mine to get the essential minerals needed to make your EV and thats before we consider that they are still built and transported using oil fired facilities. I also make regular connection requests to the grid via G98 (you likely have a G98 for your ASHP), G99 and G100 applications many are now delayed or denied due to the vast amount of upgrades needed to local transformers and substations. We have also shot ourselves in the foot with the grid by connecting bidirectional supply meaning we now no longer have the ability to isolate parts of our grid for essential O&M because we cant cut off systems feeding into it. My educated opinion is that anyone pushing for full electrification without necessary upgrades is both dangerous and uninformed, the DNO guys who actually work on the grid daily will tell you in no uncertain terms that the grid is screwed and in need of an urgent 3 trillion upgrade.

@RachelThieves Norway is at 98% EV new car sales and its grid is just fine. The grid will coupe just find with a transition that will take a couple of decades or so.

If you want to help bring down fuel costs for others, reduce demand. Oil is priced globally. More drilling here doesn’t stop price spikes. EVs and heat pumps already cut UK fossil fuel use by 14 million barrels in 2023. So the most effective thing you can do: Switch to an EV and / or a heat pump if you can. We are in a tender for a massive solar rooftop project. The corporation delivering it favour my company but they are a tad worried that we don't have any female solar installers. He knows the grid can't cope with electrification and it's unbelievably disingenuous to suggest otherwise, creeps like this will collapse our infrastructure. Solar ain't clean either, it's an environmental abomination but it will save you money. We should be real about this shit.

It's always "The sunlit uplands of renewables is just around the corner. They will definately be cheap then". But they have been saying that for decades. Prices are going up, not down.
