When we say Mormonism is a cult, we’re not just throwing out a pejorative label. We’re using long-standing definitions and widely cited frameworks. Historically, in the sociology of religion (think Max Weber and those who followed him), a “cult” refers to a movement built on new revelation, new authority structures, and a break with the historic tenets of a given faith. Mormonism fits that definition cleanly: new scriptures, a new prophet, and a restoration claim that rejects the historic church. Mormonism fundamentally redefines the nature of both man and God. But even using modern frameworks, the concerns don’t go away. Take Steven Hassan’s BITE model (Behavior, Information, Thought, and Emotional control), one of the most widely cited tools for evaluating high-control groups: -Strong centralized authority claiming divine mandate -Tight control over doctrinal boundaries, progressive revelation based on in-group status -Social and reputational consequences for dissent or exit -Clear insider/outsider distinctions tied to ultimate truth claims You can disagree with the conclusion. But the category isn’t arbitrary. Call that “offensive” if you want. But we will continue to apply consistent categories without flinching.
