@RobGeorge Jason Isbell being left off makes me wonder if the list makers listen to much music.

It would have been even stronger if it had dropped a relative unknown rapper (Young Thug) when actual titans like Ice Cube, Chuck D and Nas have each released multiple classic works that have stood the test of time.
Robert Hilburn@roberthilburn

The NYT list of greatest living American songwriters would have been much stronger if it included Neil Young and Joni Mitchell, who are American citizens and have lived here chiefly for over half a century. Another shameful omission: Randy Newman.

That date question is still my favorite interview question that I came up with at JS. Extremely diagnostic. I actually stole it from a University Challenge buzz in.

Jane Street made ~$40B in 2025 with 3,500 employees, a ~2x from the year before. At ~65-70% profit margin, that's $8M profit / employee, the highest for a 1000+ ppl company. High-frequency trading continues to be the most efficient money making engine. I want to share an old story about my Jane Street interview in 2014. Jane Street was known for hiring a lot of math, physics and CS olympiad winners from top universities and putting them through many rounds - including, for trading roles, a gauntlet of mental math. It was my 6th interview and my final round and I recall being asked "What is the next day after today in DD/MM/YYYY where all the digits are unique?" They'd toy with you and say "You can use a pencil and paper, if you want" but you knew that was an instant no. Painstakingly and as quickly as I could, I came to an answer. "How confident are you that this is correct on a 0-1 probability scale?" the interviewer said. "0.95", I blurted out, not fully knowing how to answer that. "Are you sure?" After thinking harder for a few more seconds, I realized I could've flipped the digits around to get a closer date. I gave the interviewer my answer. It was correct. "0.95 huh?" he chuckled. That's when I knew I failed. Note: fwiw, other companies that come close in efficiency are - Tether ($90M+ profit/emp) - Hyperliquid ($80M+ profit/emp) and on revenue: - Valve ($50M/emp) - OnlyFans ($37M/emp) - Craigslist ($14M/emp) - Anthropic ($12M/emp, run rate) - OpenAI ($8M/emp, run rate) For comparison, Nvidia is very efficient at scale and is $4.4M/emp.

@ffflygirl @litcapital They had a willing buyer in JetBlue that would have kept at least some portion of the jobs and flights. That was killed by Elizabeth Warren / Lina Khan. Now they're all out of work.

@litcapital don’t you think Spirit didn’t make it because of their prices - they killed themselves by charging less then what the actual cost to them was !!!! stop blaming others for a business model that just didn’t work in today’s world anymore

@hexadecimallol @HistoryBoomer @katie_campione Median listed in nyc is way higher than median rented. Theres a reason all of those apts are listed and not rented. And those that are much lower priced are getting snapped up and not listed.

@HistoryBoomer @katie_campione huh there are places for $2200 in NYC? Isn’t the median listed rent like $4000+ a month? because at 1bd rents below $3000 nyc becomes tantalizing; 2x London incomes but roughly similar in CoL

@SargonAlmighty @billybinion @LeaveB_alone Stop being dumb. Spirit went under and might not have had then been allowed to merge w Jet Blue. Certainly certain jobs or redundant routes may have been cut, but Lina Khan blocked the merger which now means all Spirit routes are cut and all its employees are out of work

@KelseyTuoc @StatisticUrban “Everyone has the opportunity” to choose, but the choices are shaped by socialization, by what jobs are legible as available to you, by what your peer group does, by what the school work pipeline pushes you toward. The opportunity is formally equal and substantively unequal. No?

for those of you who are unaware, British employment commissions have in the past found that you need to pay people the same salary for *completely different jobs* if one job attracts more men and the other more women. and that this claim can be backdated to bankrupt you.
max tempers@maxtempers

The largest supermarket in Britain, that operates on razor-thin margins, is about to be crushed for the crime of paying different jobs different salaries, while our legislature shrugs. How dare they suggest that “so-called market rates” can exist in Soviet Britain.

The median 1 Bed in NYC is $4,000. In order to qualify for that apartment, one has to earn at least 40x that, $160K - the formula landlords use to estimate the financial stability to pay rent without duress and have the reserves to do so in the case of illness, job loss, etc.
Jeremiah Johnson 🌐@JeremiahDJohns

you do not need 150K for a single person to live comfortably in NYC the reason you believe this is that you have political psychosis and have no idea what the state of reality is. Median *household* income in nyc is 80K.

It is unusual for soon-to-be-former Fed Chair Jay Powell to stay on at the @federalreserve. For someone who speaks so often of norms, his unilateral decision to stay flies in the face of tradition. Kevin Warsh will bring about a new day at the Fed, with accountability, management, and sound policymaking in the lead.

@socratays @jack_whitcomb_ @captgouda24 Maine 02 is R+4 and they still have a D rep. How are Dems responsible for that? I'm not sure it'd be easy to slice a district higher than R+4 there either.

Lmao that’s the entire point... The whole state IS the district. So 35-45% of voters get ZERO representation in Congress. That’s literally what the chart is showing, blue states already run up 100% Dem delegations with no Republican seats at all. No map tricks needed. And yeah, they can cry “both sides” all they want… but gerrymandering is literally named after a Democrat (Elbridge Gerry, Jeffersonian Republican, direct ancestor of today’s Dems). They’ve been playing this game for 200+ years and now they’re mad they’re finally losing at it.

If Republicans aggressively gerrymander the South and eliminate up to 10 Democratic seats under a narrowed VRA, Democrats could respond in blue states. For example, this 52-0 California map could become legal, flipping four seats from 🔴 to 🔵.

@captgouda24 And to be fair to Massachusetts, drawing a Republican district there is very hard. I have run a script to find gerrymanders for it twice now, and it doesn't turn up anything other than 9D-0R. Someone else could probably do it, but it's really blue!

@MDriftor @Kael2510 @damintoell Yes, I think Brandenburg applies in this case and there was no threat of imminent lawless action here. I think the government has effectively no chance of success in this case. And I think thats a good thing.

@RhodeKill74 @Kael2510 @damintoell Do you think Brandenburg applies to presidential threats? Watts v. United States affirmed hyperbole threats do not constitute true threats, but said any true threat is prosecutable. I highly doubt Brandenburg, decided weeks later, would overturn the precedent they just set.

It's kind of a deep linguistic point with how the English language treats euphemisms, but after some serious analysis, I've figured out that the reason so many people think "86" is a death threat is that they're lying
