Hamid was friend and an inspiration. His intellect epitomised the raw humanism that made him such a beautiful person. Hamid, I'll miss our many phone calls and the many inside jokes born out of dinners in Khartoum, Cairo and Beirut. I'll miss you. Rest easy now, my dear friend.

We, the TIMEP family, are absolutely devastated by the news that the brilliantly talented and deeply empathetic Sudanese advocate Hamid Khalafallah has passed away. It was the greatest honor and privilege to host Hamid as a 2022-2023 nonresident fellow.

Hamid's kindness and brilliance lit up every room he walked into, even in the darkest times. He was a truly wonderful and inspiring person, taken from this world way too soon. His passing leaves a hole in our hearts and community. Rest in power, dearest Hamid 🕊

- Shame Within Borders - Maintaining trade in times of genocide means valuing goods over humans. Markets over life. This is not policy: it is a system. A clash of values. It is either equality, freedom, solidarity. Or it is their contrary. Please choose.

Day 1 of the ceasefire: bloodiest day of the war in Lebanon, one of the heaviest days of Iranian attacks on the Gulf since the first week, and also the Strait of Hormuz still isn't open It's a ceasefire only in the sense that America has ceased firing and declared victory

So if you're keeping score at home, the ceasefire includes Lebanon but also doesn't include Lebanon, America has agreed to all of Iran's demands and Iran has agreed to all of America's demands, America will recognize Iran's right to enrichment and also insist on zero enrichment, Hormuz is completely open but also Hormuz is subject to unclear limitations... There are a lot of confident predictions about a deal that is still unclear and unfinished Both sides are scrambling to portray this as a war-ending victory when there's a decent chance that the war hasn't even ended

Our first take on the ceasefire. It's a pause, a welcome step back from the abyss. But ignore the predictable spin from both sides: it's too early to predict what will happen next. The negotiations in Islamabad will be complicated, to say the least, given the enormous gap between America and Iran. If the talks fail, a renewed war is possible. But the war is deeply unpopular in America; Donald Trump is keen to have it done before he meets Xi Jinping next month; and the energy shock would likely be even greater next time. All of that is a constraint on Trump's ability to start another round. The other option is that we go back to a version of the pre-war status quo: a battered Iran still under sanctions and the threat of further attack, sitting on a stockpile of 400kg of highly-enriched uranium. economist.com/middle-east-an…

Credit due to Pakistan, but also to Egypt, which played a substantial role, as did Turkey. The gap between the two sides is tremendous, but there's at least the beginning of potential

We’ve been in touch with US officials throughout the day and waited until we had confirmation that she had been successfully transferred before commenting. We are incredibly grateful to the HRFC, SPEHA, @FBI, @StateDept, NSC, U.S. Embassy Baghdad, and the Government of Iraq.
