In World War I, 100,000 Jews served in the Imperial German Army to defend the honor of the Fatherland and Kaiser. They fought and died alongside their non-Jewish German brethren under the same banner. As a soldier, Adolf Hitler reported to more than one Jewish commander, including Hugo Gutmann, who recommended Hitler for the Iron Cross. Despite this, many Germans subscribed to an entirely fantastical myth that "someone" had stabbed Germany in the back - that it was impossible for Germany to have lost the war on its own. Defeat on the battlefield was inconceivable to those who had mythologized an ascendant Prussia. Someone other than the army and the ruling political class had to be blamed for losing the war. Historian William Shirer addresses this directly in his book The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich: "Thus emerged for Hitler, as for so many Germans, a fanatical belief in the legend of the 'stab in the back' which, more than anything else, was to undermine the Weimar Republic and pave the way for Hitler's ultimate triumph. The French marching into the Ruhr Valley and the humiliation that came with it that gave the Nazis the boon they needed to seize control and act on their interpretation of how the War had been lost. This ego-driven failure of accountability unlocked a chain of events that has carried us to the present day. It's built entirely on the refusal to digest difficult truths - on passing the buck rather than reckoning with consequences. It reflects a failure of introspection and an inability to grapple with the results of one's own actions. It's Newton's Third Law playing out across history.

Heute sprach ich mit einem 48-jährigen Afghanen, der seit 30 Jahren nicht mehr in Afghanistan lebt und seit 3 Jahren hier in Zürich wohnt, als Flüchtling. Zuvor habe er mehr als 6 Jahre in der Türkei gewohnt. Daher sprach er recht gut Türkisch. Er habe in der Türkei als Automechaniker gearbeitet und recht gut verdient, meinte er. Hier in der Schweiz könne er nicht arbeiten. Es sei alles viel komplizierter. Deutsch habe er auch nicht gelernt, die Sprache sei zu schwierig. Sein Sohn liebe die Türkei und werde in der Stadt, wo sie zuvor lebten, seine Sommerferien verbringen. Er war ein ausgesprochen netter Mensch. Gleichzeitig habe ich mich gefragt, was seine Anwesenheit in der Schweiz mit Asyl zu tun hat. Wie kann ein Afghane, der aus der sicheren Türkei angereist ist, wo er sogar bestens integriert war, arbeitete, die Sprache erlernt hatte, wo seine Familie sich wohl fühlte, nach einer derart langen Zeit Asyl in der Schweiz erhalten oder überhaupt als Asylbewerber gelten? Nichts gegen diesen Mann aber dieses System ist nicht länger hinnehmbar...

I can see two main reasons why this is the case and why the World Cup 2026 might be a total commercial flop. 1. the pricing of tickets is insane. You cannot price the #5 most popular sport in the US (5% viewership) as the #1 popular sport (NFL, 41% viewership). This doesn't sell to Americans and it certainly doesn't sell to Europeans or South Americans who aren't used to such high prices for sporting events. Especially for the group stage where the majority of the games are going to be super boring. 2. Which brings us to the second problem - expanding to a 48 team tournament. No one gives a shit about watching Curacao, Haiti, Cape Verde, etc. (No disrespect to any of these countries, the quality is just not there). And imagine all the exciting matches like Uzbekistan vs Kongo, or Cape Verde vs Saudi Arabia, or New Zealand vs Iran, or Curacao vs Ecuador, or Canada vs Qatar, or Haiti vs Scotland, etc. Again, no disrespect, their fans are surely excited, but for the rest of us it's a game no one will watch except a limited number of ppl from those countries. So don't expect a lot of fans on the stands for any of those games. Fans are in it for the quality, not quantity. FIFA made a big mistake in expanding the tournament as it sacrificed quality for quantity. And now they are surprised ticket sales are not going well. Sponsors got their allocations, great, but even they are having trouble giving the tickets away. The whole thing will turn into an event without spectators. Which is a sad thing for football. Organizations like FIFA/UEFA keep ruining it, and fans will keep loosing interest.
