If the game was on the line and you had to put a catcher in CF to make a catch, who would you be picking?

@BeaneaterB @CasualBravesFan Right, my point is that strikeout rate alone doesn't tell you how good or bad of a hitter someone is. Guys like Judge, Ohtani, Schwarber, and others have high whiff and k rates, low chase rates, high walk rates, and hit for lots of power.

Two things can be true. A) Austin Riley has been better in the month of May and even better in recent days than people seem to care acknowledge. He hit .500 in the Nationals series. B) Austin Riley needs to improve at getting runs in from 3B with less than 2 outs and he needs to find better consistency overall. It’s not black and white.

This is easily answered with wOBA The wOBA value for a random single is 0.9. For a bunt single (everyone moves one base), it'll be closer to 0.8 to 0.85 0.35 x 0.825 = .290 wOBA That's Billy Hamilton at his peak
Codify@CodifyBaseball

How valuable is an MLB hitter who only bunts (never fully swings) but consistently hits .350 doing it? Assume he has the elite speed necessary to pull this off (so he can steal bases) but that all hits are singles. Is he a good offensive player or an offensive liability?

@CrosbyBaseball Those same streets blamed me a lot in 24 and 25. Street cred from those in the streets has evaporated. (Undefeated broadcast this season. We measure wins if fun was had.)

@CrosbyBaseball If somehow they could put together a package for Witt, everyone would be mad at how much the Braves had to trade for him lol

The Kansas City Royals are not trading Bobby Witt Jr He's probably top...ten? five? on the "why would we trade this guy?" list right now (Skenes, Ohtani, Judge, Soto, JRam, Witt, Carroll, and then maybe Crochet, Chourio, and Jackson Merrill or EDLC)
Craig@Craigcooper3434

@CrosbyBaseball @LockedOnATL @LockedOn_Braves Ronnie got to get his head out of his … And Kim has got to be replaced immediately.. throw a package at KC for Witt , Kim batting .129 ain’t cutting it .

This was so much fun. @CliffordAsness joins @CultishCreative and me on @excessreturnpod to walk through the greatest hits of his research. We covered: • Bubble Logic and what investors still get wrong about bubbles • Why volatility is a useful measure of risk • The myth of “cash on the sidelines” • How private markets hide volatility • Why missing the best (and worst) 10 days is a bad argument • The case for international diversification • When to pull the goalie in hockey • Machine learning, overfitting and the future of quant investing bit.ly/4wLUk00

@zbritton I think there are elements of the game that people who didn't play can't understand. I also think there are people who never played that are better at solving quantitative problems than the majority of former players. If I were running a team I'd want a blend of both.

I won't waste your time and define each into their categories. Saber Metrics/Analytics introduced a new set of stats that, for the most part, non-playing front office executives determined were better than traditional stats at valuing player performance. The tension most feel is whether actual play on the field (Wins, Losses, actual individual performances) should outweigh computed projection models or vice versa.

It's not analytical baseball or old school baseball. If you can only understand one side, that's a big problem. This age of baseball is about blending the two together. Analytics are a tool to help maximize a roster, identify strengths and weaknesses in a player without bias or emotion. If used correctly, it's a tool to help player performance. Once the game begins, it's about “old school" baseball. Preventing runs defensively/pitching and scoring runs on offense. It's that simple. It's about the fundamentals of the game. Finding a way as a player that day to win every at-bat I take or pitch I throw. Days when I free great, days when I feel terrible. Understanding what it takes physically and mentally to do that is just as important as understanding spin rate, launch angle, wOBA, OPS+, etc.

The top 7 teams in sac bunts have 91 combined. The other 23 teams have 100. Those 7 teams are a combined 194-146 this season (.571 win%) with 4 of them in 1st place. Don't let anyone gaslight you into thinking you should never bunt. Detroit is the only team with 0 sac bunts.

@PastTheEyeTest They don’t want to. They don’t like any modern data, therefore it has to be bad.

I'm not expecting people to know how to do a complete PyBaseball search, operate an SQL database, or know how to create a LightGBM or xgboost trained model. But please do the bare minimum and educate yourself on what analytics are.

People are just searching for reasons to get mad now. This mass hysteria around analytics is totally fabricated because people do not care to educate themselves on the functionality of analytics, therefore they are led to the assumption that they are bad. Do numbers scare you?
Maryland Sports Blog@MDSportsblog

Orioles... Injuries are something... Pitching lab caused a lot of them... Too much on the science and numbers. Baseball is a human game. Elias is a scout not a GM and definitely not a president. Albernez is a no body. Another Elias stats bitch boy. Where are the real managers and real coaches that used to play the game? Not some college kid with a 2.5 GPA in sports management that never played baseball... The Orioles are ruining talent, ruining pitchers. Giving them coaches that could never pitch and never hit themselves. Drew French how many Major League Hitters have you struck out? NO FUCKING ONE. NOT ONE!!!!! SO WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU KNOW ABOUT PITCHING!!!! DUSTIN LIND THE ORIOLES HITTING COACH HOW MANY HOME RUNS IN THE MAJORS DO YOU HAVE NONE NOT EVEN A HIT YOU ARE A CLOWN BOY BUM!!! GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE!!!! YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS COACHING GUNNAR HENDERSON, OR ANY BASEBALL PLAYERS WITH TALENT YOU NEVER HAD!!!! GET THESE LOSERS OUT OF BALTIMORE AND HIRE A REAL COACHING STAFF WITH REAL EXPERIENCE!!!! THEY ARE BUMS, LOSERS, AND HAVE NO BUSINESS EVEN BEING MINOR LEAGUE COACHES. I AM SORRY BUT UNLESS YOU ARE A GENIUS YOU CAN NOT DO OR PRETEND TO BE AN ATHLETE.

Final line for Chris Sale: 7IP, 4H, 1ER, 0BB/8Ks 18 whiffs and a 38% CSW brings Sale's ERA down to a tidy 1.89 and have him solidly in the NL Cy Young race
