@TicketmasterCA why does your software reject every single Visa and Mastercard I put in? And when I call for support, the only options are for people who have managed to buy tickets? You're a monopoly, you should be able to set up a functioning payment system.

@JerusalemDemsas @ezraklein @DKThomp I just want trains, houses and no billionaires, and I think it’s slightly silly to pretend you can get the first two without also addressing the third one.

@jdcmedlock No tax on cops —> cities pay them less so their net income is the same —> cities spend more revenue on social services. Checkmate libs.

@dax19956 @mattyglesias @DoctorVive @MichaelEMann You're an engineer, you have some grounding in logic. You know that what makes someone a climate denier is their denial of climate change, not whether they share a policy stance with Donald Trump.

@MichaelJames357 @AlecStapp Pretty sure Canada has won every softwood trade dispute it’s ever launched against the U.S. It is clearly compliant with its trade obligations.

@AlecStapp Is Canada still subsidizing their softwood lumber production in violation of their promises via trade agreement?

@Pontus4Pope @mattyglesias There is nothing about mal intent there. Could have just as easily suspected her of incompetence and not mal intent.

@RyanTolusso @mattyglesias "At the time, nobody suspected Lucy Letby of wrongdoing." "On 24 June 2016... the lead neonatologist... demand[ed] that Letby be removed from the unit." C'mon now.

@Pontus4Pope @mattyglesias Nothing in your second set of pictures contradicts anything in the first. The second set establishes that some people established a correlation between Letby's presence and the child deaths, not that anyone had firmed up suspicion she was killing children.

@mattyglesias Almost the first thing I see at your link is the first picture. Second and third pictures, contradicting it, are fully sourced on Wikipedia. If they are willing to lie about known facts like that, I'm not reading further.

@RyanTolusso @mattyglesias It isn't full access though. To be truly unsegregated, the university must allow local residents to access any part of the campus at any time, including dorms, dining halls, classrooms, etc. And campus security must be eliminated to ensure that no restrictions are enforced.

Everything about Israel aside, the South Side of Chicago clearly benefits from the presence of U Chicago and would benefit from further expansion.

@mattyglesias How can a university simultaneously expand into a neighbourhood and segregate itself from that neighbourhood. Aren't universities famously pretty open places with easy public access?

It is true that I am not from Chicago. At the same time it is also true that the south side is suffering from disinvestment and population flight, not "displacement" and that U Chicago's presence there is positive for the city. x.com/djbyrnes1/stat…

@ShawnMenard1 @DeanTester Honest question: instead of simply blocking market rate, why don't you actually get a small social housing project off the ground, show the city and voters it works, and then use that to build momentum? Surely that is more a more proactive way to build your vision?

@DeanTester I’ve been advocating for affordable housing for a lot longer than capitalist free market supply-side only solution advocates. We got here because of free market “solutions” and governments decimating affordable housing creation for decades.

Preserving the historic structure does not prevent the building from being converted to “brand new” “luxury” units, but it does reduce the total number of units available — fewer jobs, less tax revenue, less affordability.

@Leopardonbackup @mattyglesias In a world where we have more beauty available at our fingertips than ever (literature, art, music, films and television, dance etc) the really weird position is that the one kind of beauty that cuts across a big economic issue is the one worth fighting for.

@RogersHelps hey Rogers, your door-to-door salespeople are annoyingly aggressive. One came to my door twice in one day and after I made clear I was happy with my non-Rogers cell service, continued to ask questions until I had to basically close the door in his face. Not impressed

What's up with the ludicrous @AirCanada gift card policy? Can only use two gift cards, and the 2nd must cover the balance of the flight. Gift cards should never be worse than just using cash. Don't put em on your wedding registry folks @Transport_gc @OmarAlghabra @GillianMassel

@clownmalenko @hamiltonnolan How are we proving that the new units cause the price increase, rather than the market more broadly? And it’s still unclear to me where the working class are going to live if the rich are buying up all the old housing because there is no new stuff.

@RyanTolusso @hamiltonnolan The issue is how real estate works. New, high priced units raise the average price (usually called comps) for all real estate. For rich and poor. Housing markets aren't simple supply and demand markets.

Housing is the left’s biggest blind spot. It’s a counterintuitive issue and most of the disagreement is in good faith but still. Less housing does not create affordable housing no matter how much you wish it would. twitter.com/dsa_housing/st…
DSA Housing Justice Commission 🌹🌆@dsa_housing

We support Denver DSA. Affordable housing can't be provided by the market. Reforms offered up by the state and developers that don't include democratic control and redistribution of land are ultimately false promises that serve only to benefit capital.

@clownmalenko @hamiltonnolan Based on the level of economic discourse in my local politics, and the housing shortage in major cities across the globe, I wouldn’t say “I work in housing policy” provides much credibility. There’s a lot of bad policy out there!
