"Of course I'd like them to testify, because I think it's pretty clear upon questioning you'd learn that they're just in this for the cash grab." —@ChrisMurphyCT wants sports commissioners to testify before Congress on their prediction-market partnerships

Interesting how none of them want to ban sports betting in betting apps that can front run customers and set their own odds though. But the gambling lobby that donates millions to Congress shows up, and now Congress cares about the more strictly regulated CFTC approved industry? Pretty brazen. Even if you don’t understand the structural nuance of why gambling and prediction markets are two different products - you’ve got to be raising an eyebrow at why our politicians only seem to care about one of them? How many members of Congress are getting that DraftKings money right now?

@adamscochran Kalshi needs losing players too. Betfair is a look 20 years into the - has dealt with this. "Freezing" markets is also good for market structure - courtsiding is bad. The fees on Kalshi make it just the same level of vig as sportsbooks for most user. The difference just technical

@oaktoebark @mansourtarek_ Think this percent could be way higher this year cause favorites r becoming higher favorites and technology getting better but could change fast with a bunch of upsets

@oaktoebark @mansourtarek_ The perfect bracket number is not that high cause you don’t just pick 50-50 but ur right it’s definitely more likely a astroid hits. I was reading it as odds of someone hitting a bracket where in a pool of 20 mil it’s like +600,000 (.0167%) someone hits a perfect bracket

@mansourtarek_ the odds are effectively zero. there is a better chance of the world exploding that hitting this bracket.

The day before the Iran War, a flurry of big prediction market bets were placed - likely from Trump staff - that the war would start the next day. That's outrageous, and today @RepCasar and I introduced legislation to ban these corrupt prediction markets.

The worst part about this is that even in the absolute longshot timeline where someone wins this, Kalshi is likely to pull out right before Championship game.

Offering a billion dollars for a perfect bracket is the ultimate marketing scam because the odds of actually picking every single game correctly are about one in nine quintillion. It is a brilliant way for a betting platform to harvest the personal data of millions of hopeful fans who do not realize they have a better chance of being struck by lightning while winning the powerball than they do of surviving the first round of upsets. They are basically dangling a life changing fortune that they know with absolute mathematical certainty they will never actually have to pay out.

Actually, they were rewarded for it: It’s quite the accomplishment for a 17-16 team to get THISCLOSE to getting a bid. Being 1 game over .500 should not get you an at-large birth into this tourney, period. And yet they got close. So they WERE rewarded!

@Bauertology So is committee saying they use predictive metrics for seeding and not selecting?

Bauertology@Bauertology·
Worth noting from committee chair Keith Gill—Miami (OH) was the last team in on the seed list, but they were not the last team selected! They were chosen ahead of each of NC State, Texas, and SMU (Mustangs were the final team chosen), but were scrubbed down based on metrics/individual quality of wins. So last at-large team on the seed list doesn't necessarily mean last team chosen!
